Moco’s Cute Cat Ears, 6%DOKIDOKI & Strawberry Planet in Harajuku
TKPop, 11/2/12

Harajuku is known worldwide for its eclectic street fashion scene. There are hundreds of fashion genres, subgenres, & subcultures that have bloomed on these famous streets.

One of the Harajuku styles that has reached “iconic’ status is fairy kei. Fairy kei fashion features rainbows of pastel colors, bright bows, and supercute accessories. Japanese fashion brands popular with fairy kei girls include 6%DOKIDOKI, Nile Perch, Spank!, and ManiaQ. In addition to the established brands, young Japanese designers also contribute their creativity to the Harajuku fairy kei scene. Two of these up-and-coming designers are Moco & Tomo, founders of the indie fairy kei fashion brands Strawberry Planet and Mello.

Moco is a student at Tokyo’s famous Bunka Fashion College, as well as running her own indie fairy kei fashion brand Strawberry Planet.

She wears a leather jacket over a Mello by Strawberry Planet fairy kei top, a tulle skirt, striped over-the-knee-socks with bows, and black platform shoes. Accessories include cat ears (nekomimi) with large bells, a 6%DOKIDOKI Milky Way hair clip (one of their most iconic items), a Strawberry Planet ruffle choker that says “Keep Out – Danger”, various pastel necklaces from her own brand, a cute pastel earring, a bow bracelet, a pink pearls bracelet, spike bracelets, an Angelic Pretty ring, a jeweled heart ring, and a small silver ring.

If you’d like to know more about Moco or her fairy kei fashion brand, take a look at her official blog.

Gothic Harajuku Fashion w/ Algonquins & Metamorphose Black Lace

Yukka and Yuki are both wearing gothic all-black outfits in Harajuku. Yukka went for an androgynous look, while Yuki opted for a romantic and feminine outfit. You might recognize Yukka from the modeling work she’s done for various Japanese magazines and fashion brands.

Yukka is wearing a long sleeve top with cutout shoulders and zippers (from Algonquins) paired with torn skinny jeans. Her military style lace-up boots were an online purchase and her bag is Vivienne Westwood. Her accessories are from Bloody Mary and Crazy Pig: silver rings (some with skulls) and a long pendant necklace. Yukka is donning short brown hair, and loves shopping at Algonquins and Ghost of Harlem. Her favorite music is L’Arc-en-Ciel and rock in general.

Yuki is wearing a lace top with bows and a ruffle skirt, both from Metamorphose. She matched them with lace gloves and tights, as well as a lace headband tied with a ribbon under the chin. She has long, platinum blonde hair, rhinestones under her eyes, and blue contacts. She’s also wearing black Mary Janes, and she told us that Alice and the Pirates is her favorite place to shop. When it comes to music, classical is her favorite style.

But a new force has appeared on the horizon, ready to challenge current trends and return gyaru culture to its rightful place in the sun. Meet Black Diamond, Japan’s top kuro gyaru unit!
