SAVING MR. BANKS

Run time 2hours

The story of how Walt Disney courted P.L. Travers into letting Disney option the rights to Mary Poppins is brought to the screen in this non-fiction drama starring Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson, and Colin Farrell.  A doting father, Walt Disney (Hanks) promises his adoring daughters that he will bring their favorite fictional nanny Mary Poppins to the big screen. Little does Walt realize that surly author P.L. Travers has no intention of seeing her most famous creation bastardized on the big screen, a fact that makes keeping his promise a difficult endeavor.

For two weeks in 1961, a determined Disney does his absolute best to convince Travers that the film version of Mary Poppins will be a wondrous and respectful adaptation, meanwhile the author only grows more convinced that she has made the right move in preventing the proposed film adaptation.

Also Starring, Bradley Whitford, Paul Giamatti, and Jason Schwartzman co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi.

Based on a true story and likely an unauthorized drama probably not in any way how it happened. But of an interest for us Disney fans.

WE will meet at Starbucks Coffee from 11:00 to 11:40am followed by the 12 noon showing of the film at the Historic Orinda Theater! The Orinda was saved from the wrecking ball a few years ago and its Art deco Beauty still lives on!  The Orinda is easily accessible by BART.  Just take BART to the Orinda Station and use the Pedestrian undercrossing  bridge/path which leads you directly to the "Theater Square" complex.  There you will find Starbucks directly next door to the Theater.  After the film we will be walking three doors down to one of the BEST Hofbrau's in Contra Costa for an early dinner and conversation.

Look for me in my Purple Sweatshirt and Kim, co-host.   If you cannot make it please Un-RSVP yourself  so we will not have to look for you at the pre meet. We will not be saving seats, But we do hope to see you there!   If you travel by car please use the BART parking lots which are not enforced on Sunday and weekends as a convenient place to park because parking surrounding the Theater mall is very tight.

Warmly,
Lawrence

As always, a very nice gathering of film fans to view and later discuss the movie. The movie was a lot heavier than I had anticipated but I enjoyed it and recommend it.

Mr. Banks not a Documentary and not a truly a whim of fiction fails in its attempt to be both. Raising more questions than answers. This film leaves the viewer wanting to dig into the factual truths of Mr Disney and the Mary Poppins film authored by R. L. Travers. Lightly ignoring Walter Disney's Smoking, alcohol habits and rumored business ethics. How much of this was a Tom Hanks dramatic invention?

Where did the author actually sell her soul for the opportunity to publish with Disney. And how much of the Australian ' back story ' was true? This film dealing heavy with denial , Alcoholism and suicide was certainly not a family acceptable subject.
