Paramount Theatre: Mary Poppins for 5 Dollars!

New Meet Location : Meet at TIERRA MIA Coffee NEXT DOOR to the Paramount Theater from 6:00 - 6:45pm

Followed by the 8pm showing of...

MARY POPPINS (1964) - A mystical nanny literally falls from the London sky and into the lives of two lonely children. Hailed as one of Walt Disney's greatest films, and one that won Julie Andrews the Best Actress Oscar for her title role, this remains one of the most popular movies ever made. Mary Poppins sums up everything that is good about Disney motion pictures: great characters, wonderful showmanship, and a strong story. Released in 1964, just two years before Disney died, Mary Poppins, with its unique combination of live action and animation, was Walt Disney's swansong and truly deserves the term "masterpiece." (The film received 13 Academy Awards nominations and won 5 awards: Best Actress, Best Film Editing, Best Original Music Score, Best Song for "Chim Chim Cher-ee," and Best Special Visual Effects.).

After the film, for those interested, we'll walk two blocks to Vo's Vietnamese restaurant, for an after-movie discussion. Vo's serves appetizers, drinks, and dinners till 1 am. It's located at 59 Grand Ave. at the corner of Webster.

See  "Mary Poppins" again on the big screen! The Paramount Screen!!! For only $5!

Film showings at the Paramount include a half-hour organ concert of classic songs (starting at 7:30), followed by cartoons, newsreels, clips of coming attractions, and even a raffle drawing with prizes, such as dinners for two at some of the area's finest local restaurants! Winner of the East Bay Express's "Best Movie-Going Experience" and voted "Best Deal in the Bay Area," it's a wonderful night out on the town!

Nothing could be more fun than an old classic film. Oops, yes there is! An old classic film at the nation’s most beautiful art deco theater, The Paramount! It's like stepping back into the past, into one of the glorious movie palaces of a bygone era! And all for a five-dollar admission. That’s right, five bucks!

I will be hoping to meet similar-minded moviegoers that Friday night. So who’s with me? I recommend taking BART, which stops right underneath the theater, letting you avoid the 25-minute traffic jam at Caldecott Tunnel. Should you attempt to drive, bring an extra set of tires for your evening stroll through downtown Oakland to your car. Tee Hee Hee. Parking is a typical city experience. Yet, a for-hire PARKING garage sits right next to the Paramount should you make the car trip! Rumors of ten bucks cost.

With previous experiences, I can say that it’s no fun being late. So I will be going early to the theater since some past films that played there practically sold out by curtain time. So I will meet you from 6 – 6:45 at TIERRA MIA Coffee. There's always popcorn, wine, and concession items at the theater, too!

BART Directions: Take BART to the 19th Street Station. Travel to the rear of the train/station and take the escalator up. Continue to the Exit turnstiles at the rear of the station, and then take a left U-turn, going up the escalator to street level. Do a right U–turn on the street and behold the Paramount marquee ahead! Cross 20th Street. Note TIERRA MIA Coffee at the corner. Proceed to the theater box office and purchase your ticket for 5 bucks (cash only). Then return two doors down to TIERRA MIA Coffee to meet me inside.  I will be the guy with long sideburns and a trench coat! ;-) Just kidding… I mean a purple S.F.S.U. sweatshirt, reading a book (me, Lawrence, Asst Organizer).

At 6:45, you may catch us in line to get the good seats in the balcony. If you arrive after 7:15, just go up to the balcony and look for us in the first middle 9 rows (if we're lucky to get them)

6 PM Box office opens
7 PM Doors open
7:30 Organ performance
8:00 Show time!

    Hi Michael and Lawrence,
So sorry I can't make this screening, and I don't see any more upcoming films at the Paramount - but perhaps you'll organize something for a different theatre? North by Northwest is playing at the Castro on Sunday, March 23rd...lots of Philip Seymour Hoffman throughout the month too.
