Let's go see Wadjda!

This is a story of a teenage girl who dreams of owning a bike and competing with the boys. This sort of things just doesn't happen, at least not in Saudi Arabia. Critics are giving this 5 stars.

If you want to join us for dinner meet us at the University Café at 5:30 pm. State your dinner plans in your RSVP.  I'm limiting dinner to 8, but the movie is open to whoever wants to join us.  We'll meet in front of the theater at 6:45 pm.  Might be a good idea to purchase tickets ahead of time.

Feminism is the most important and dramatic social change in history. Feminism has changed the structure of every part of society... for the better. I was a working adult in the 1950s when sexism AND racism were still very much in place in America. Thank God for the changes, even though we still are not perfect. I am NOT a "Lib".... don't misunderstand me. I support structure and rules in society....

We Americans need to see these kinds of movies to realize how fortunate we are to live in America.

I agree Jennifer. But lets not use this movie to patronize arab women like myself and give us "americans" a nice pat on the back for being "liberated" despite the restrictions that Saudis live under I'm amazed at the saudi womens intelligence and fortitude. Kay thanks and have a nice night

Five stars it is. Not for themes such as biking or feminism, but its portrayal of the clear-seeing eyes of youth before the cataracts of habits, culture, and--i'm talking about us here, as much as anywhere--propaganda set in. Let's hope that clear vision frees us.

The movie even though I missed some of it by dozing a bit, was great. That young girl that played Wadjda is a very attractive and talented actress.

The no shows for dinner was a bummer. Fortunately a number of people who did not sign up for dinner showed up later for drinks and dessert. The waiter was not too happy seeing all the empty reserved seats and then having them filled up with people who got their orders from the counter. ....But the movie was great.

John -- I apologize. I did not realize that you had reserved places in the restaurant. I am still trying to understand the 'format' of this group. I thought the 'dinner' was more informal. And, I did not think I was doing something wrong by ordering from the counter. I am very sorry that there was this misunderstanding. Please forgive me.

I just missed the 3 PM RSVP "deadline." My computer is on the blink again. The Meetup system is not letting me formally RSVP because it says "RSVPs closed." I'm planning to attend the movie; I'll meet you guys at University Cafe in case someone doesn't show up or perhaps others of us who didn't make it in time can sit together for dinner at another table.

Since I'll be heading to Palo Alto tomorrow and it's a bit of a drive for me, I've decided I'd better pass on Wadja this evening - as much as I'd like to see it and share the time with the group. I hope everyone enjoys this evening's outing.

I hope we don't use this movie to patronize and feel sorry for the poor arab woman. I don't believe that was the film makers intent

I believe it's more about courage.

Gee I didn't realize there was so much interest in a biker movie. For some reason Meetup has created a wait list. There should not be one. If you RSVP, just come. There is still room also at the dinner table.

Look for me in the bright red jacket. Call me on my cell[masked] if you get lost or are delayed.
