I had a hard time deciding between the two big water movies: Captain Phillips or All Is Lost? Robert Redford or Tom Hanks? Redford won out, largely due to his dedication to indie films, which is appropriate for this meetup. I'm looking forward to this "strong and silent" type of film acting.
We will meet first for dinner at The Counter @ 5:30 in the food court area of the shopping center. Non-diners can meet us inside the lobby to the theater at 7:00. Showtime is 7:20. Please note "dinner" with your rsvp. Afterward we can mosey on over across the street to Vintage Wine Merchants for wine, bites, and chat. Click here for a map of The Row.
Rotten Tomatoes Top Critics give All Is Lost a 100% Certified Fresh Rating (40 critics, avg rating 8.6/10). Click the text to check it out.
From A.O. Scott, NYT review....
"The ancient Greeks believed that character should be revealed through action. I can’t think of another film that has upheld this notion so thoroughly and thrillingly. There is certainly no other actor who can command our attention — our empathy, our loyalty, our love — with such efficiency. Mr. Redford has always been a magnificent underplayer, a master of small, clear gestures and soft-spoken intensity. This role brings him to the pinnacle of reticence but also allows him to open up in startling ways. Behind the leathery, pragmatic exterior is a reservoir of inexpressible emotion. An opera thunders in the silence." Click here for the full review.
