Cinequest Classic - The Hands Of Orlac (1924)

If you'd like to grab dinner before the movie, note "dinner" in the Comments section, so we can get a head count. We'll meet at Blackbird Tavern (click for info), a block down from the theater. Dinner will be at 5:30 PM, so we can be in line by 6:30. Please be prompt.

Seating will likely be scattered, so look for us in line, first. We may make a run for the balcony…

After the show, we can go somewhere for coffee and dessert. Gather in the main lobby.

This may be a popular show, so order your ticket in advance, using the Cinequest page. Tickets are $10.

And now, on with the show!

The Hands of Orlac (1924) (silent with live accompaniment) Starts: 7:00 PM, Ends: ~8:55 PM

Starring: Conrad Veidt, Alexandra Sorina
Director: Robert Wiene
Plot: A famous, concert pianist suffers a tragedy in a train accident, when his hands are so badly injured they have to be amputated. Fortunately, a surgeon offers him a second chance: A double hand transplant! Good plan -- except the hands are those of a convicted murderer, and, well, you just can't teach old fingers new tricks…! But do the hands really have their own plans, or is their new owner homicidally inclined…? The first adaptation of a French thriller that has been remade three times, including Mad Love (1935), with Peter Lorre.

Director Robert Wiene and star Conrad Veidt had previously made the Expressionist classic The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, in 1921.

Presented in the restored 110+ mins. version, with live organ (Dennis James) and piano (Michael Pecak) accompaniment.

What a treat!! The renderings of silent classics that the Cinequest festival presents are always marvelous, and this one was no exception. The combination of organ and piano with the occasional Theramin sound thrown in worked well for this dark story about perception.
