Pathfinder - Rise of the Runelords

  • September 30, 2012 · 11:00 AM

I'm looking to start a Pathfinder group in either in San Francisco city or somewhere with easy access via public transport (Endgame in Oakland or Zephyr Cafe in Outer Richmond are two suggestions).

I volunteer to GM - I just got my copy of the new Rise of the Runelords book and am keen to give it a go.

All we'd need is another 3-4 players (I have one friend interested already) If there is a demand, we could meet up at a pub or cafe first for introductions, planning etc.

I'll be ready to start by September 30. I suggest a monthly Sunday game running 5-6 hours. This format is open for discussion (of course) and we could always opt to play more frequently down the track.

I'm assuming most folks here are at least familiar with DnD 3.5 rule set (Pathfinder has been nicknamed 3.75 Ed), but we should be able to handle 1-2 completely fresh starters.

Note: myself + 4 players is the maximum I'm ready to run for, but I wasn't able to chance the RSVP settings to reflect this.

I think I'm going to have to bow out - my weekend time isn't really free for gaming - I've just started a games night on Wednesday evenings in SF starting Oct 3rd at which I'll be running PFS games but the space will be open for others to play as well. See http://warhorn.net/sf-geek-games-night/ for more info (will require registration due to building security)

Sorry to hear it Shannon. I noticed your PFS game come up on the Pathfinder Society mailing list. Maybe once my schedule stabilises a little I can join a game - I'm really interested in the way the Society works.

Looks like I'm late to the game on this one. If you find yourself needing one more PC, let me know and I'd be happy to jump in.

Thanks for your interest Patrick - we may be a little full right now, but if you PM me with your email address I can let you know if a slot opens up!

Hey, it was great meeting up with y'all last night!

Alexander, here are the traits that we were talking about: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/traits . The Rise of the Runelords-specific traits are here: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/traits/campaign-traits/rise-of-the-runelords and in the campaign-specific player's guide.

Is this the right place to continue the conversation? Or should we move to OP or the Google Group?

thanks so much eric, was great meeting you too.

  • Andrew P.

Yes, let's go back to the original plan (which coincidentally suits the GM best, heh heh).

Drinks next Thursday 13th at 8pm (optional).

First game Sunday September 30th starting 11am.

Then one game a month after that, with flexibility to change down the track.

Location TBD but very likely to be Downtown SF or Oakland near a BART. We'll form the group around a) availability on Sundays and b) ability to get to the location.

    September 6, 2012

    • Andrew P.

Well, I look pretty much like in my profile pic, I'll probably even holding a beer. Black hoodie or dark grey shirt with zombies depending on the temperature inside. Failing that, brown converse all stars with orange laces.

    • Shannon C.

I'm running a bit late currently in the marina and buses are being slow. Also haven't had dinner so can't stay long unless Dave's has food (I barely ever drink)

obsidian portal is awsome guys, sign in, it does everything this meetup thing does and more! and you can copy your character there! ook at maps, see wiki pages about the campaign, tones of stuff.

    September 7, 2012

  • Andrew P.

I started a Google group for this campaign. If you're at least semi-serious about joining, please PM me your email address so I can invite you. Or, you may be able to request membership by following this link (not sure how it works): https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/slayers_sf

    September 7, 2012

    • Eric W

One can apply to join the group, yes. The google group does seem a little redundant with the Obsidian Portal page, though. Is there a reason to do both?

      September 7, 2012

    • Andrew P.

Yes - I've always had good luck getting subscription to an email group, but have a much harder time getting people to join and check Obsidian Portal!

      September 7, 2012

  • Andrew P.

By the way, build a character if you like (I know some have already started). I toyed with the idea of rolling, but that makes it too hard to prep before the session. Standard 15 point buy, absolutely anything from the main Paizo books (core, advanced, ultimates). Please don't use any of the Golarion-specific rules. Upload to Obsidian Portal when you're done ...

if the game is gonna be on saturdays same time slot, that eliminates me, I work saturdays from 9pm to 6pm, making it impossable to get to the city until around 7:30 optamistically speaking. I have sundays and mondays off so ither of those are fine, any day after 7-7:30 I can try and do, but weekedays trafic btween mee and the bartstation is bad, so on a wekday its more like 8pm with exception of monday wich i can always leave home early caus i have the whole day off. I thought eveyone was ok with sunday day?

    September 6, 2012

  • Shannon C.

I should be able to meet on Thursday. Have to check if I can make Sunday however - will depend heavily on where we meet - and frankly Sunday late-morning thru early evening is unlikely to be a sustainable time for me going forward as that is a time my wife and I typically do a bunch of household chores/errands. I could possibly do later in the afternoon on Sunday or Sunday evening depending on where we play - if it ends up being East Bay on a Sunday mid-morning that's probably not going to work for me.

    September 6, 2012

    • Andrew P.

How would it work for both of you if I put Saturdays on the table, with the same time slot? Weeknights are difficult for me, because a) I won't be available in the city until 7:30pm and b) I don't want to be playing beyond 10pm, because I need my brain for my job.

      September 6, 2012

    • Eric W

Oh, wait! I keep on forgetting we're talking about a *monthly* game, not a weekly one. Going forward, one Sunday a month should be fine, although my next few Sundays are already spoken for. I don't know where that exactly leaves me with respect to everyone else, but we can talk about it next Thursday :)

      September 6, 2012

  • Andrew P.

    ***Meet and greet***

Let's make it Thursday 13th at 8pm. I like Eric's suggestion of Dave's at 29 3rd Street, right by Montgomery BART. Let's lock it in unless there are strong objections.

    ***The first game session***

Sunday 30th at 11am. Location still TBD, but either in the city or Oakland-ish, near BART.

At the moment I'm marking attendees for the actual game as:
    - Alexander
    - Eric
    - Zachary
    - Shannon
    - James

This is the maximum number of players I want to take on - the list is based on the first to RSVP (fairest decision I can think of). I'm fixing the group for the first session here. If you have to drop out due to location, please let us know in case someone else wants to stand in.

  • James J

8 o'clock that works for me next question is the where

    September 6, 2012

  • Andrew P.

Ok. How about Wed or Thu after 8pm? Now, to find a good place in the city near BART. Is everyone ok with a bar? Who thinks they can come? Remember, this is just to meet in advance of the game on the 30th.

    September 6, 2012

    • Eric W

I can do either day with a mild preference for Thursday. Dave's at Market and 3rd Street is close to the Montgomery BART station.

      September 6, 2012

    • AlexanderD

wendsday or thursday next week? after 8, count me in, that would be perfect.

      September 6, 2012

  • Eric W

Mondays are generally bad for me, too. I also strongly prefer San Francisco to the East Bay since I live in the Richmond and it's already a trek for me to get downtown, let alone across the bay. I don't mind meeting late. The bars stay open until 2am :)

A fifteen point buy sounds good to me. I like my games to be a little gritty.

    September 6, 2012

  • Andrew P.

Sorry Shannon, my last post was ambiguous. I still suggest the GAME to be on Sundays, Monday was just an opening suggestion for the meet and greet and a bit of a chat.

It seems to me that we're split between downtown and East Bay.

The point buy debate is an interesting one. 25 is right out, I have been plagued by super-statted characters in the past. Perhaps we can start with 15, but with an additional level 2 bump if things are too tough.

    September 5, 2012

  • Shannon C.

Monday nights are the one night I can't make it - and the East Bay is very much less than ideal for me - so if that's the best location for everyone else I'll probably have to bow out. Mondays are when I play with my current group (in San Rafael). Also with a party of 4 (or even 5) I'd personally recommend playing with a 20pt buy but that's a personal preference (and of course DM's decision) depends on the tone and how difficult/epic a campaign is planned.

got room? i got a place near macarthur bart...

    September 5, 2012

    • Andrew P.

      Chairs are awesome.

      September 5, 2012

    • Andrew P.

and yeah - feel free to sign up!

      September 5, 2012

  • Andrew P.

So who wants to meet and greet one night next week, after work? I propose Monday, since that's the only preference expressed so far. As for the gaming location, near BART seems to be prime for everyone.

    September 5, 2012

  • Andrew P.

I live downtown AND two blocks from BART. If you don't mind gaming while sitting on the floor my place could be our backup venue (pending spousal coolness). I like Eric's idea of catching up beforehand though. Anyone want to meet somewhere for an hour one weeknight between now and then?

Btw Muni is just the bus and some of the underground system. Basically everything PT in the city that's not BART.

    September 5, 2012

    • Andrew P.

From what I hear, some Muni lines also act as part-time toilets ;-)

      September 5, 2012

    • Eric W

It's all part of that famed San Franciscan efficiency!

      September 5, 2012

  • Andrew P.

By the way, as it stands we're full: Alex, Eric, Shannon, James and potentially Chris?

    September 5, 2012

  • AlexanderD

well the compromise is clearly a bart friendly location, seems like me and everyone is cool with a SF game if its close to bart, im not shure what Muni is? if you need it I can try looking around the bart stations in the city and help look for public venues that can host us. Did you try games of berkly? that game store is 50ft from the berkly bart station and has a big game room. as for the appartment not being furnished the one I run at isnt ither lol, and a privat plce to run is always better if you dont mind guests. im sure if we all put our heads together we can find a place.

    September 5, 2012

  • Andrew P.

Well, I can access both BART and Muni easily. My problem is I've only been in the States for 8 weeks ... So I've got no idea about potential locations. My apartment could become an option in future, but right now there's no table! Or chairs ... Or anything resembling a comfortable perch for 5-6 people ... So - where can we compromise?

I've never actually gamed in public spaces, so the concept of pulling up some chairs in a coffee shop is new to me.

    September 5, 2012

    • Eric W

It might be easier without chairs and tables -- the entire floor becomes the playing surface! Do you have hardwood floors? Wet erase washes right out of that, ya? :)

      September 5, 2012

    • Eric W

Maybe if people are coming in from the west side of SF and the East Bay, downtown is a good compromise after all. The Metreon has public tables and wifi. That might be a good place for an initial meeting, at least. I don't know how busy they are on the weekend, or if and when security might complain.

      September 5, 2012

  • Andrew P.

Great Chris. Feel free to RSVP. I've also set up a basic site for the campaign on Obsidian Portal, sign up to discuss logistics if you like: http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/sunday-slayers-sf (that goes for anyone who's expressed interest on this page, too).

    September 4, 2012

    • AlexanderD

hey andrew, you know as the gm of the campaign in obsidian portal you can send us all invites to our personal emails!?, that would allow us to get into the site and post stuff in the character section and send you messages through there.!

      September 4, 2012

    • Andrew P.

Yup, I just don't have everyone's personal emails yet ;-)

I live in the east bay, so I would perfer something close to bart, endgame works for me, but driving into sf....bridge tole pluse i always get lost when driving into sf, would rather just take bart. I am only available on sundays, and mondays, and mondays only every other monday caus I am running a game every other monday in SF. if the game is in the east bay I could possably do weeknights after 6pm but if in sf it might take a while to get there on bart (1-2 hours due to rushhour traffic+ bart travel time) . looks to me like everyone is agreed it needs to be close to bart. we are split on location, zepyrs isnt near any bart nless im looking at the wrong one?? are there any pizza places close to bart? I have had very good luck with round tables for starting groups, they almost always have side rooms and BIG Tables, and as long as you order food, they dont hassle you.

    September 4, 2012

  • Shannon C.

Endgame doesn't work for me - it would mean about a 45-1hr transit each way for me whether I drove or took BART (I live about 10-15 from the nearest BART which I would have to drive to and then it would be a 25-30 ride for me on BART - longer on Sundays most likely).

    September 4, 2012

  • Andrew P.

Cool James. I need a place near BART too. I'm still thinking of Endgame in Oakland, at least for the first session. How would that suit everyone else? I just have to call them and check that we can game there on Sundays.

    September 4, 2012

  • James J

Hello all I am to interested in playing with you all. I have been playing Pathfinder for that last two years and I have never played Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path. I live in El Sobrante, CA so the East bay works best for me but if we have to play in FS can it be by BART?

    September 4, 2012

  • Chris B.

I would participate in a monthly Sunday game in San Francisco. That would be awesome.

    September 4, 2012

  • Andrew P.

No problem Eric, this is just as much about building a group as selecting a date. Happy to change the date to accomadate more players!

    September 4, 2012

  • Eric W

Hi, I'm very interested as well. I've been playing in a Pathfinder campaign for the last year (Crypt of the Everflame/Masks of the Living God/City of Golden Death), so I'm pretty familiar with the rules. I like to bike, so anywhere in the city is fine with me. Weekday nights are probably easier for me to schedule for than the weekend.

    September 4, 2012

  • Shannon C.

I might be interested - have to figure out my schedule and chat with my wife about what I can commit to but I've been looking to either play or run a Pathfinder adventure path. I play Pathfinder Society regularly (nearly every week at Gamescape North in San Rafael) but a game in SF would be ideal as I live in the Outer Sunset. I'm fairly experienced with Pathfinder (both playing and running it). Given that Zephyr Cafe is a very short drive from my house but Endgame would take me a lot longer to get to my vote for location would be Zephyr or another SF, non-downtown location. I have the Second Darkness adventure path as well as a lot of Pathfinder modules and books which I could run as well (and there are some other paths I've been eyeing getting)

    September 4, 2012

    • Andrew P.

Thanks for the interest Shannon - I'm open to just about any location in the city, as I live downtown. As long as it's viable via Muni or BART - I can be there. It doesn't have to be Sunday, but 7pm is the earliest I can do on a weeknight and Saturdays are off the table. Looking forward, I'd be quite happy to alternate adventure paths chapter by chapter, or something. Having an experienced GM/player along would be great too, because I'm not the most rules-minded Pathfinder out there.
