Announcing a new Meetup for 'Zoot Suit' - Bay Area Swing Dancers!
What: Lindy "Mix-Up" @ Oakland's Athletic Playground
When: November 21,[masked]:00 PM
4770 San Pablo Unit "E"
Oakland, CA 94608
A monthly Dj'ed East Bay Venue is enjoying its 8th consecutive month this Saturday, 21 November. This event is a "3rd Saturday evening" monthly event & deserves attention. I do understand that this event "competes" with the time slot of SF's "The Rent Party" (formerly "The Dog House"), but it really is an inviting Oakland oasis. Additionally- let it be known that I have not, nor do not sponsor/schedule non-live events, however this is well worth noting. Specifically it is: (1) a young & growing venue (2) it is preceded by an 8PM lesson (lesson & dance $5) that is eclectic & varied (3) the "Mix-up" part of the title signifies a nice flow of assorted 8 count "dance style" music but primarily focuses around Lindy/ECS (4) as it is new it is friendly & I have found it "not cliquey" at all BUT
MOSTLY...# (5) A lot of new members here quote a recurrent theme about being new to dancing Lindy Hop, thus why not be in a comfortable & inviting place. These reasons are exactly why I recommend this venue.
Additionally I'd like to share a review that was created & essentially sums up everything so well. This imagery will take you right there:Jun 20,[masked]:57 PM
This has been the 3rd monthly dance @ The Athletic Playground on Saturday night in Emeryville. Located @ 4770 San Pablo, the name perhaps is confusing- whereas is this actually a playground or not?
Pergo floors, a nice sound system & a 40x100 foot dance floor does signify a dance hall, but nonetheless the name is catchy. The place can fit 125 dancers & barely 75 were present. As described- this is a new venue & a real blessing to the East Bay where Swing Dancing is often scarce. This is an all age venue, no beverages are sold. The age distribution is 20-30s- 60% 40-50s- 25% >60yo- 15%.
A good variety of dancers. 35/35/30% beginners/intermediate/advanced. Everyone dancers w/ everyone. The place heats up nicely. Music seems to be a blend of Swing/Rockabilly/Motown- a good variety but perhaps unpredictable.
The groove of the place was very homey & inviting. A one hour drop-in lesson precedes the 9PM dance & the lesson varies monthly. The crowd was very eclectic- drawing from a rich & talented potpourri of Swing, Blues, Lindy, Salsa, & ECS.
It was a good time for one & for all. I mean really- It's about Swing- how could one NOT have a joyous time .
