1/2 Price Tix to Talk by Famed NY Times Wine Critic Eric Asimov~Dinner After

How-to-love-wine3

Experience a tasting with Eric Asimov, the most respected wine writer in America, whose book, How to Love Wine, comes out this month. The NY Times wine guru comes to the Commonwealth Club for an easily digestible primer on picking a good varietal. With the vast array of choices from every conceivable grape-growing region in the world, it can be overwhelming to try and separate the merely drinkable from the truly spectacular, but Asimov will share his tips for choosing that perfect wine.

After the discussion, he'll join you for an actual tasting from the local Bravium Wines.

Tickets currently available at Goldstar $12.50 + $4.00 fee http://www.goldstar.com/events/san-francisco-ca/wine-tasting-with-eric-asimov

For those who wish, we will grab a bite to eat afterwards at Mehfil across the street--applying the lessons we learned.  An actual winemaker, Bryan Kane, will join us, IF we get enough attendees, to present some of his wines from SF Winery on Treasure Island that go well with Indian food.  Indicate on your RSVP whether you will be attending.  Thanks.

Eric Asimov mentioned a book called "uncorked" as a good wine book to read, and I went to amazon.com. There are three such books by different authors. Does anyone know or guess which he ment?

Kreider tried to be a winemaker in Marin and finally threw in the towel. Fascinating guy. I would get this one. The new book by Marco P. also sounds very appealing. This is probably the book that Asimov meant. Get both.

Mr. Asimov was entertaining, funny and engaging. Extremely glad I went!

Many sensible observations by Mr. Asimov. The tasting after was mobbed. But across the street, at our Meetup, we enjoyed nine wines with some superb Indian food. Too bad more didn't join us.

Larry, Kate, and others who would like to make acquaintance before heading in and finding seats together - let's meet at the Peet's Coffee patio that's right at street level in front of the entrance to 595 Market Street. Aim to be there before 5:30. (I'll be the one in a black leather jacket with a red pashmina scarf.)

Hi Tom. I'm a bit confused. Are people meeting *before*? If so, that works for me since I work practically across the street. Can someone give me some details? Thanks.

Members aren't "meeting" before the talk, just walking into the room and sitting wherever they want. The meeting/Meetup is occurring afterward at the restaurant Mehfil just on the other side of 2nd St. (#28). Bring a bottle of small production wine or make a donation of $10. If you are bringing white you can give it to me at the entrance before the talk starts and I will chill it in my car down below.

oh, ok, I guess I did not see the dinner until later. I cant make the dinner, but if anyone wants to sit together beforehand they can email me. I guess we will also see each other in the lobby afterwards for the winetasting at the Commonwealth Club. Thanks.

Just realized the dinner too. I won't be there for that, I'm afraid.

Tom, What varietal would you like for the dinner exchange? Is a 2009 or 2010 Ok with you? Since I am new to the group I don't know your wine tastes, but I am sure I can bring something you might like. BTW all three of us attending the dinner have also purchased tickets for the Asimov talk.

I moved the pointer. I should always check since they are often misplaced. Kuro is right. You can enter the CC from 2nd or Market, but it is right on the corner up the escalator. Mehfil's first resto was on 2nd and Folsom, but this is their third. There were at least two other Indian restaurants at 28 2nd.

marker won't stay moved, but the address is the address and the building is right on the corner with Mehfil on the other side of 2nd.

I think google map is confused because it was given an address "595 Market @ 2nd, San Francisco, CA". Remove "@ 2nd", then it shows the right place. Mehfil that we we are going is the recently added location on 2nd near Market.

Just checking - the Commonwealth Club is on Market Street, but the map link from the event shows us pretty far south on 2nd Street (and that's also where Mehfil is located). We're all starting out up at 595 Market, right?

Count us in for 3 for the dinner afterward: Mark Lieberwitz, Andrea Rubenstein and myself.
