Don Soker Gallery, where we had planned to hold this month's wine event, presents some insurance and ABC issues which can't be resolved in time for our event on Friday evening, April 20th. So we are returning to our "club house" which has both requirements in place -- Gallery 4N5~The Artists Alley on Mission across from Bloomingdales . I am including the website write up for your information. For more info, go to http://www.meetup.com/Bay-Area-Wine-Society/events/57919662/
Five years ago next month the Bay Area Wine Society Meetup, then called Bay Area Wine Enthusiasts, held its first Taste Off--rating and ranking wines from Sonoma at the Tempura House. Our friends at Vinquest assisted with the tasting.
Since then our consumer critques have ranged from Israeli wines to Coro Mendocino Zin based blends, to favorite picnic wines, and wines that go best with Thanksgiving turkey. Most recently, in partnership with Affairs of the Vine, members and other guests judged a selection of Cabernets at the SF Winery on Treasure Island.
This month we turn our attention to distinctive blends,"Splendid Blendeds"as we call them, both red and white--beyond the more familiar Bordeaux, Rhone and Tuscan blends--that deserve more respect than they tend to receive from the wine cognescenti. With blends the winemaker can craft a wine from a much larger palette, crossing over national and stylistic boundaries. It is not unlike orchestrating different instruments into an original piece of music that is greater that sum of the parts.
The wines will be paired with some tasty nibbles, including gourmet rustica flatbread with a variety of toppings
Our unique approach is based on the premise that certain special wines have an appeal to a broad range of different palates not just to the refined tastes of the wine pros. We want to offer attendees who represent a cross section of regular wine drinkers who buy wine to have with their dinner to decide on their preferences
We seek to offer the opportunity for people to socialize and network over new and different wine styles and flavors.
Each attendee, in a walk around format to allow plenty for schmoozing, can rate and rank a flight of wines, each one with a different configuration of grapes and chosen for their outstanding QPR or Quality Price Ratio, winespeak for best bang for the buck.
The winning wines will then be available for purchase at a discount through the soon to launch non profit wine.coop.
For those who would prefer to just meet and greet rather participate in our People's Choice competition, we will have wine by the glass avaible.
Also present will be several wineries, such as Silkwood whose proprietors are shown above, to showcase their own "Splendid Blendeds", and other releases, whose vintners can comment on the crafting of such wines.
We will also raffle or auction off bottles of the featured wines to assist ouron profit project PAIRINGS--pairing winewith philanthropy which among other causes has helped raise funds to help global cocoa farmers, protect Bay quality, aid the Japanese tsunami victims, and to help launch a program encouraging young black girls to get excited about computer programming.
Our Early Bird price is $15.75
