This is not an in-depth technical discussion. All web pros, including non-programmers, are most welcome!
There once was a time when web developers building sites and apps online had to "roll their own" and install localized software packages to accomplish pretty much anything. And that's if you were lucky enough to control your own server. On a shared hosting system, good luck getting anything out of the ordinary set up.
Thankfully, those days are now at an end. Cloud computing has entered the scene, and with it comes a whole range of exciting opportunities for website builders. In almost every case, the cloud makes -- to barrow a quote Larry Wall -- easy things easy and hard things possible.
The cloud isn't just about helping build more sophisticated websites in new ways, but also interoperating with a range of user services. Pull photos off Flickr. Pull files off Dropbox. Pull contacts off Facebook. The web has evolved into its own operating system and the most successful sites and apps are taking advantage of it.
In this meetup, Jared White, Co-founder of Mariposta, will quickly fly through a wide variety of cool ways to use the cloud through various services available, from searching to image transformation to customer support to e-commerce to on-the-fly PDF generation -- and also how to consider the kinds of built-in features people now expect from the web, for example importing a photo from Instagram and not just a local file.
Come ready to be inspired to take your websites to the next level. Come take a walk in the clouds!
