The Naked Freelancer: Transparency & Referral Network Building + POTLUCK

The Naked Freelancer: Transparency & Referral Network Building + POTLUCK

Clothing optional! Just kidding. Please wear clothes.

Happy January and welcome back to regularly scheduled programming! We're going to be doing a group discussion-based format this time which is something we haven't done in a while and get each other fired up for the new year! The purpose is for everyone that comes to be open to sharing information about how they do business and discuss successes and challenges.

Come prepared to share:

•  What makes you successful. This can include techniques, tools and philosophies

•  What makes you struggle. There may be someone out there who figured out how to solve your problem.

•  We encourage you to share such things as how much you charge, how much work you get, what sort of clients do you target, etc.

•  All those fun things like strategies for saving for taxes (bleh), share your CPA and other professional references, health insurance, incorporation, liability insurance, etc.

The idea of this meetup is full transparency for the purpose of learning from one another and making each other the best we can be in business. If we also share all those dirty little secrets like rates and income, we're more likely to raise the standards of our local industry and who wouldn't benefit from that?

We're also hoping to do some networking for the purpose of building up your referral network. Wimps have been successful by subcontracting and spreading project referrals back and forth so come with a mission of finding some kick-ass people to add to your back pocket.

BRING SOME FOOD OR DRINK TO SHARE! And remember to wear clothes but THINK like you're naked. See you soon!

*LOCATION DETAILS*

We are meeting at the SRJC Campus in Santa Rosa.
Rm 4638, 1st floor of the Bertolini Center
Bertolini Center is located in the front of campus at Mendocino Avenue and Elliott Avenue.

Bring some cash (I think it's $5?) if you plan to park on campus.

Excellent. Lots of great info, lots of food. I think we could do variations on that theme for the rest of the year.

Inspiring event. Thanks in particular to everyone who spoke up with advice, critique, insight, and candor. Cheers!

Fabulous! Well facilitated and lots of participation. This could have been an all-day, in-depth discussion - we certainly had enough food for it!

Kind, good, talented people who don't mind being vulnerable and sharing their successes and failures in an effort to help the common good of the group. Amazing to see how people have been such a help to each other as folks new to the area startup their own practices.

My first meeting with this group (finally!!) -- lots of talent, very supportive, looks like a strong and growing community. Looking forward to what we'll create together in 2014.

For those lost - the entrance is on the EAST side of the Bertolini building, that is, on the Mendocino Ave side. Unfortunately, the rest of the building does not connect, which is mega confusing :) Sorry for the trouble.

Just clarifying - SRJC doesn't allow alcohol on premise...So I am assuming beverages should not be our favorite Wine or Beer? Or did we get special permissions from Club Services?

    January 29, 2014

    • Melissa G.

We don't officially have permission through Club Services to have alcohol, correct. However, there was beer at the last one and were told by one of the teachers that it's not a big deal. So, WIMP assumes no responsibility for what beverages are present during the meetup. :)

You're going to love what I am bringing: Undercover Baking Agency goodies, a little local gem the SOFA District http://www.undercoverbakingagency.com. I'll also bring a few fig leaves for any bashful Naked Freelancers. :-)

Note: Wednesday's Meetup is at SRJC so bring some cash (I think it's $5?) if you plan to park on campus.

It would be really really nice if this one was somewhere in Sebastopol.

We are working on reserving a room for the rest of the semester at SRJC. This is a central location for Sonoma County and works for most people (and we don't have to pay for it!). I'll update the location as soon as it's been approved :)
