I know many of us are probably accustomed to sleeping in on Sundays, but this Sunday while believers are on their knees praying in Church, we have a chance to get up early and do something to benefit humanity.

We will be volunteering at the Capital Area Food Bank from 9 AM to 1 PM. The Capital Area Food Bank is the largest, public nonprofit hunger and nutrition education resource in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area. We have an appointment and they are expecting us so please remember to RSVP and change your RSVP if your plans change. They are looking for a group of 20 to 30 people. No one under the age of 12 is allowed to work in the warehouse.

Orientation and training begins at 9:00 AM. Please make every effort to arrive a few minutes early so we can start on time. You will possibly be working with other individuals and groups and we train everyone together. There will be a fifteen minute film on the food bank on how we serve the community.

The following are commonly asked questions by future volunteers:

What will we be doing at the Food Bank?

Individuals will most likely be helping us in our warehouse with other groups. Depending on the size of your groups, you may be working on several projects. Most activities involve some type of food sorting. It could be sorting food drive items into bins or boxes, repacking boxes of food, sorting out by food categories, or re-labeling boxes. The activity can vary from day to day depending on what we have coming into our warehouse. Sorting food in our warehouse is a major activity, which relies on volunteers to help get this food out to our agencies. This work is considered light/medium labor, but we can find work for those who have some physical limitations with advance notice. Wear jeans and comfortable shoes (NO OPEN TOE SHOES)....

Do we need gloves?

If you have them, feel free to bring them!! We will provide latex gloves to keep your hands clean.

Is there parking?

We do have a parking lot in front of the warehouse where volunteers can park.

Are you near a Metro?

Our DC location is about a 10 minute walk from the Brookland-CUE metro stop on the Red Line.

       very rewarding work
    •  This was a great activity and I think that we should make it a reoccurring event.
    •  The activity went well. There was not a lot of time to socialize because we were busy packing boxes and such, but it was nice to get out and be active on a Sunday. I'm glad I went.
    •  Fun!
