About Din Tai Fung

Rethink that vacation to Taiwan and head to this Arcadia mini-mall housing one of the best dumpling spots this side of the Pacific. The bustling, minimally decorated restaurant is the only stateside branch of a famous Taipei-based dumpling house. The compact menu features approximately 50 options: delicate steamed dumplings, nourishing soups and a variety of vegetables served in various incarnations. The house specialty is xiaolongbao, or small soupy dumplings, little pillows tinctured with pork and filled with hot, savory consommé. There is also an assortment of northern Chinese dumplings and sweet treats, like the longevity peach, a steamed baozi filled with black sesame paste or mashed lotus seeds. Din Tai Fung is justifiably popular, so expect a wait for one of the highly coveted tables. To meet demand, a second location opened just a few doors away.

Food 25

Service 16

Despite “brusque” (if “efficient”) service, “basic decor” and “pricey for the area” tabs, “massive crowds” gather every weekend to experience the “holy grail” of “juicy pork dumplings” at these neighboring Arcadia links in a Taipei-based chain; though there are other “fresh” Chinese dishes on the menu, their trademark “mouthwatering” “morsels from heaven” are the real stars here.

Let's go out for dumplings. We will eat family style.  Please bring cash.  The price will be around $14 + tax + tip per person.  Here is what we will have:

  1. Juicy Pork Dumplings (2x$7.75)
  2. Juicy Pork & Crab Dumplings (2x$9.50)
  3. Small Dumplings with Soup (1x$9.50)
  4. Shrimp & Pork Dumplings (1x$8.25)
  5. Shrimp & Pork Shao Mai (1x$8.25)
  6. Red Bean Dumplings (1x$5.50)
  7. Sweet Taro Dumplings (1x$5.50)
  8. Shanghai Rice Cake with Shrimp (2x$9.00)
  9. Sauteed Spinach with Garlic (1x$8.00)
  10. Pork Chop Fried White Rice (1x$7.50)
  11. Pork Chop Fried Brown Rice (1x$8.50)

There are 2 Din Tai Fung restaurants located next to each other.  So please take note of the address above, as well as the picture!

GREAT place- made all the better by ordering a wide range of plates for 8 people who enjoy/appreciate a good restaurant. Even the take-home bag was a hit.

The round table sitting allowed all of us to chat with each other. Best dumpling house in SGV!. Enjoyed meeting everyone. Thank you Dominic for coordinating this event.

Caveat: If you are new to xiao long bao, there is actually a technique to eating them since they are filled with HOT juicy broth. I'll demonstrate for all the neophytes when we are there.

When I went to Taipei, Taiwan recently, everyone said to try this restaurant. After waiting in line, I picked up the menu and saw that they have a branch in Arcadia! It will be fun to compare the 2 restaurants.
