Do you like Vietnamese lobster?  Let's go out for Vietnamese and Cantonese at Newport Tân Cảng Seafood.  This restaurant was founded by a Chinese family who lived in Vietnam.  We will eat family style.  Here is what we will have:

• Rice (10x$.60)

• Newport special lobster (2x6 lbs. per lobsterx$16.99 per lb.)

• Catfish with hot and sour soup (1x$11.95)

• Shrimp with walnut (3x$15.25)

• Shaken beef (3x$12.95)

• Shrimp salad Vietnamese style (2x$11.95)

The price will be $33 + tax + tip per person.  Please bring cash.  Lastly, this meetup is ideal for those who like their beef the same way they like their martini --- shaken, not stirred.  :-)

(Continue from below.) This reminds me of the first time I was at Newport Tan Cang and got the Chicken with Curry Sauce. This is another dish that isn't authentic and I recommend that you don't get. I some times think that something must have gotten lost in the translation from Vietnamese to Cantonese. Perhaps these are the Chinese who didn't get straight A's in school. So instead of becoming doctors and lawyers, they became cooks. Fortunately, they do an excellent job of cooking our lobster and shaken beef. The lobster was $16.95 per lb. On a side note, I came here at 4:34PM and got us a number. We were seated at exactly 5PM. I, however, did prevaricate to them when they asked me if our entire party was here. We were 3 people short. I'm glad that they don't check. :-) Thanks to everyone for coming to my meetups in 2013. No more meetups until next year! :-)

Newport Tan Cang Seafood Restaurant is a restaurant that offers Chinese food lunch specials. However, if your goal is only to get that, then you are missing the real reason to come here. The Vietnamese food here is delicious enough to be served at a Vietnamese wedding banquet. Vietnamese dishes like the Newport Special Lobster and the Shaken Beef are a must order. The lobster strikes the perfect balance among fish sauce, green onion, and garlic. In addition, the Shrimp with Walnut is lightly battered with walnuts that have been lightly bathed in honey. This is in deep contrast to the overly battered Sam Woo version. The Catfish with Hot & Sour Soup is also worthy. Next time, we will get the Crab Meat with Asparagus Soup that is commonly featured at Vietnamese weddings. The only disappointment was the Shrimp Salad. Frankly, it wasn't authentic. Vietnamese people use shredded papaya not iceberg lettuce or tomatoes in our shrimp salad.
