The day has come for us to evolve. For the last few years, we have been known as "Open NY Forum." This year, the Governor launched "Open NY" - NY's Open Government initiative. With this namespace collision, we couldn't be happier. We had been advovating for a more Open New York, and we are finally getting one.
Additionally, Noel Hidalgo, our primary organizer, joined Code For America's Brigade team as their NYC Program Manager. Seeking an opportunity to formalize the informal, we too are joining Code For America. We are now Code For America's NYC Brigade. Now that we are 800 strong, we are the LARGEST Civic Technology, Civic Startup, and Open Government community in the United States (and maybe the largest in the World).
Note our email address has changed to < [address removed] > and we will be using the #BetaNYC hashtag.
Over the next few weeks, we'll be expanding our programing and continue to do what we do best... "Build a better New York for all..."
If you have any questions, please email me personally at < [address removed] > OR reply to this thread and I will respond publicly.
Thank you for making this City a better place...

-- More about the #BetaNYC community --
betaNYC is building a better tomorrow for all. (This group is formerly known as "Open NY Forum.")
Since 2009, we have been NYC's civic technology and open government vanguard. By leading elected officials to engage with NYC’s technology community, passing transformative open government legislation, supporting NYC's civic technology startups, and building apps to protect democracy and serve our fellow brothers and sisters, we have become America’s largest civic technology and open government community.
* We focus on the intersection of civic engagement through technology, and advocate for open and accountable governments.
* We are a multi-stakeholder community of builders and doers.
* We are building a better City by solving 21st Century civic problems.
* We are dedicated to improving the lives of all in New York City.
* We are Code for America’s NYC brigade.
We use meetup.com as our membership space. On Meetup, you can sign up to receive announcements about events or join in our discussions.
For a healthy and sustainable New York City, we have updated FDR’s four freedoms for the 21st Century.
* Freedom to connect.
* Freedom to learn.
* Freedom to collaborate.
* Freedom to innovate.
The Brigade is our most valuable program. This is you! The Brigade is where NYC’s civic technology community comes together to build solutions to the city’s problems. We are Code for America's NYC Brigade and we are inaugural members of NYC’s CodeCorp.
* BetaTalks, HackNights, and Gov Geek Drinks:
We take an active approach to community building. You can find us hosting weekly hack nights, monthly report backs, or kicking back networking the City’s leading technologists.
* Open Government Advocacy & Campaigns:
As internal and external advocates for a more effective government, we are are incrementally improving government through changes in policy, the creation of new legislation, and fighting for the future.
* Unconferences & Hackathons:
Our signature event is an annual event bringing together all elements of NYC’s civic technology, civic startups, and open government community. We believe there is only one way to build the future, by building it collectively.
