This is great! I love this conversation… Who's distilling it into our idea page for future hacking?

You can get detailed economic census data by zip code.  From there you could count the number of jobs in each sector and get a good understanding of how big each sector is.  Unfortunately, it seems like the most recent data is from 2011.

It'd also be cool to see the city center in terms of how much city/state/federal money is spent where. Such a visualization could let you explore the different categories of government programs, and interact with them to see how they affect the overall balance. Just an idea.

Indeed. I know I have seen a map of NYC with the height of structures representing the income of the residents. Yes, a certain section of the UES is prominent on that map.

A visualization of NYC busineses (not just residents) and the level of $ they generate (plus in a separate chart the # of people they employ at what salary and/or dividend) would be great. It would be helpful to include total taxes paid, in the yearly income figure that is represented by the map.

That's the geographic center. Now pretend the plate is weightless but still flat and rigid. Put about eight million tiny equal weights on the plate representing where each resident lives, and find the point of balance again. That's the population center. Neither of them is Shea Stadium.
