Re: [betaNYC] 311 for community organzing: next steps

I just thought I'd chip in. Off the back of the 311 chat a week or so ago I knocked together a quick viz of the 311 complaint from 2010 by zip code. You can switch the choropleth with the dropdown on the left. I've not done any cleaning of the data, so there are definitely some issues. Check out 10018 for most complaints. I'm guessing there's one person there that does a lot of complaining.

We had a discussion at the hacknight today, coming up with some examples and existing tools using 311. Next step is to hear from real users -- what problems are you trying to solve? Notes from the discussion here.

I'm going to see if we can get a meeting with a community board member/district manager in an active Brooklyn district in the week of October 21st. Email me off list if you want to join.

Also trying to get a community org meeting too. If you have ideas for other people we should meet with, please share!

This effort jives nicely with other work around community boards more generally (by OpenPlans, Noel, etc).

Looking forward to getting something in use and making a difference soon!
