Re: [betaNYC] Day care map project

Hi all,

I found out a little bit more about the 311 list of Day Care facilities - these are the facilities that are subsidized through ACS. DOHMH has a different list of licensed Day Cares, which can be found through the original link that Anita provided (https://a816-healthpsi.nyc.gov/ChildCare/ChildCareList.do). Let me know if you have any other questions about this, and I'll get more answers for you.

Also, as a representative of 311 Content Management, data integrity is very important to us, and I'd love to hear more from anyone who finds any discrepancies in the API. Specific information with examples would be most helpful so that I can investigate if there is a problem and work to fix it.

Thanks,

RE: [betaNYC] Day care map project

Thanks Chris.  The lat/lon is probably not really latitude/longitude, it’s probably feet in the context of the NAD83-NY State Plane-Long Island coordinate system that’s used for all NYC agency data.  So the “lat/lon” numbers are really “feet from the zero point of the coordinate system”, one of the values being feet to the east, the other value being feet to the north.  (Excessive technical details here: http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/PUBS_LIB/ManualNOSNGS5.pdf).  So either you’d need to know the projection and do a transformation, or if you’re using GIS the software will do the transformation for you.

Cindy,

You actually do can get there... just a little convoluted.

Steve, Anita, et al,

You'll need a developer login to really try out the API.

The way the API works you have to first request the info from the facilities list API, then traverse the list and request the details by id.  You get a JSON doc like this for each:

[
 {
  "id": "[masked]E0-12BC-11DB-9B9D-96DAE110FEB8",
  "facility_name": "196 Albany Avenue Day Care Inc",
  "expiration": "[masked]T00:00:00Z",
  "type": "Child Care Center",
  "brief_description": "Group child care center for children 18 months through 4 years old.",
  "description": "Group child care center.",
  "features": [
   {
    "feature_name": "Group Child Care Center"
   },
   {
    "feature_name": "Preschool"
   }
  ],
  "address": "196 Albany Avenue",
  "additional_address_information": "",
  "borough": "BROOKLYN",
  "city": "BROOKLYN",
  "state": "NY",
  "zipcode": "11213",
  "displayed_hours": "Mon - Fri: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM. Open on holidays.",
  "lat": "[masked]",
  "long": "[masked]",
  "eligibility_information": ""
 }
]

Unfortunately the lat/lon is not useable in the results - you can geocode it through the GeoClient API though - then it's easy to throw on a map.  That's basically how we went about this with the NYCCares App.

Best,

Chris

Cindy, thanks for this.  But when I click your 311 Content API link below, it doesn’t go to the 311 page, instead it just defaults back to https://developer.cityofnewyork.us/  I wonder if the link you’ve provided below is just for internal city agency use?

Re: [betaNYC] Day care map project

Thank you, Andrew, the problem is the State database has only daycare for School-Aged children in NYC. If you filter and then check Infant, Toddler and Preschool capacity, you get only zeros.

I think this is what http://childcaredesk.com is using and that is why it does not contain the licensed child care centers for young children. Only for older children and then possibly unlicensed family-based child care.

But if you can find out anything more, please let me know! Also, if someone has a suggestion how to approach NYC DoHMH and ask for the data to be released, please let me know.

Thanks, Anita

NYS has a dataset which might be helpful:

If you filter on Region Code = NYCDOH you get the NYC stuff, but the metadata document does confirm that day care centers in NYC are under the jurisdiction of NYC DoHMH. This data gets updated quite regularly. I will try to find out if NYS OCFS is getting a feed from NYC.

The problem with http://childcaredesk.com/ is that they do not seem to have access to the database of licenced places that I want to map. I searched for several established centers in my neighbourhood (that are in the database) and none of them are in that map. So it looks like they are using other datasets, but I will contact them to see if we can collaborate.

The database I talk about has all the health inspections and I eventually would like to summarize them in the map.

Hav you checked out Steve’s suggestion of childcare desk.com? It’s a pretty good map, although no info other than the basic contact, max capacity and date of last inspection. What else could be added?

Wow, thank you Baris! That was quick! I don't think we need boroughs separately, we have the zip codes. There is more info one could get at that could make the map more useful, like age range etc. And eventually I was hoping to get all the health inspection results and summarize them in the map as well.

Let's take this off the list and anyone interested can contact us ([address removed])? I will start a github and send out the link to the list soon.

Hi all,

I would like to make a map of all licensed daycare centers in NYC. The
data is online
on
https://a816-healthpsi.nyc.gov/ChildCare/ChildCareList.do but it
is not on NYC Open Data despite someone suggesting it a year ago.

So, I am thinking of scraping the data off the site above. Anybody
interested in working on this with me? Anybody have experience with
scraping? I am looking at Scrapy (
http://scrapy.org/), but don't know
if that will work.

If you are interested or have feedback, please email me at
