Re: [betaNYC] Day care map project

Hi all,

The link I sent out for them map does not work anymore, because I was not able to upload new data to cartoDB without losing the original link.

To avoid this from happening again, the map is now embedded on my private website: http://www.anitaschmid.com/datascience/

I would like to purchase a domain name to host this map so that parents can access it reliably. Let me know if you have advice on how to go about that. Alternatively, I could leave it on my private website, what do you think?

Thanks! Anita

Love this work.  I'm working with the Open Government Partnership and we're writing a white paper to be delivered at a Steering Committee meeting in Bali in May.  The goal of the White Paper is to demonstrate how grass roots organizations in cities are changing relationships between governments and people with Open Data.  OGP is an Obama Administration initiative run out of the State Department that promotes Open Data to 64 nations around the world.

I would like to include this work in the white paper because it is a great example of a self-organized group of civic volunteers using Open Data to create new public services that city governments themselves are not providing.

To do this, I need a one page write up that describes the map, who created it, how it was created, who will use it, and how the city will benefit.  Can someone get that to me in the next week?

For reference purposes, we are already publishing this story from Palo Alto:  http://www.reichental.com/?p=551

As a New Yorker, I'd like to see something local from BetaNYC included too!

Can we do that?

Best Regards,

Steve

It's gorgeous!  Maps made with scraped public data are the 2nd best kind of map...

Here we go, the first map: http://cdb.io/1hcvW98

I combined permits that have the exact same addresses, will upload everything to github later.
Also, it's on cartoDB right now, ultimately, we might look for a different host. But this is for free and was easy to make.

Now we have to work on streamlining the process and updating it and also hosting it.

Thanks to everyone who helped!

I’ve geocoded the file, in case you’d like the georeferenced version.  See attached.  I added three fields at the end of Chris’s file – GeocodedCategory, Lat, and Lon.  The GeocodedCategory indicates the reference data I used for the geocoding (PAD2013 basically means it’s geocoded to a building footprint; LION indicates the LION centerline file).  I can share the shapefile also if you’d like.

Re: [betaNYC] Day care map project

I took a crack at this tonight.  Wrote a scraper in Ruby using the Mechanize gem.  It grabs all the goodies in the details pages for all 2200 daycares and outputs to CSV.

It doesn't grab the inspection results, but that wouldn't be too hard to add at this point.

I hope it helps!  Geocode it and you're ready to map!
