Re: Extracting NYPD Crime Stats from Google Map

Thanks for the examples, Nathan. Looks great. My goal with this data will be to roll it into a larger socioeconomic index, that includes things like youth unemployment, poverty, social vulnerability, transience, etc to look for places where the city should prioritize investment and attention.

If you have any ideas for great data sets beyond the Census, do share :)

Glad to have found this group. Looking forward to a meetup soon. -s

Sanjay,

For reference you can look at the work we at PediaCities did with T. Levin's scrapped point level crime data. The GitHub that Noel mentioned has more data, but you can find a CSV for 2013 point level data on PediaCities here: http://nycdata.pediacities.com/dataset/nyc-crime-data.

Map comparing crime rates for geographies in addition to Police Precinct, including Community Board District and Neighborhood: http://nyc.pediacities.com/fsmaps/NYCCrimeMap/

Point data visualized for a neighborhood in the Bronx: http://nyc.pediacities.com/Resource/CommunityStats/Mott_Haven?tab=4

Blog post about our process and methodology: http://www.pediacities.com/2014/02/nyc-crime-map/

There's a lot more that could be done with this data, so I'm interested to see what you come up with!

- Nathan
