Re: [betaNYC] Historical Assessment Roles

Hi Kevin and Avishai

This particular page seems to go back to 2009

We should request that DOF provides assessments for much more.

I have written and it always seems to end up in a email chain that goes from person to person and they each seem to ask the same question which can be summarized as "Can you clear up what you are asking for?"  It is amazing that NYC DOF does not seem to even know what is on their own website.  My experience is that the people at the Tax Commission at least are aware of what is going on but their hands are tied by S7000A and it's fixed 6% increase in most real property tax and assessments.  Amazing that we in New York State have no direct initiative process and we have taxes growing much faster than inflation while Massachusetts and California passed property tax caps and assessment = market value laws.

In New York City there is a very insidious "game" being played.  The "representative" get to say "look I did not increase your property tax rate, it was the NYC DOF that raised your assessment"  But they do not mention that the assessor is only blindly following the current law.  Very sad.

I've loaded all the available assessments here https://bigquery.cloud.google.com/table/personal-real-estate:nyc.assessment?pli=1

The big query version is public to all authenticated users.  This only means that you would need a google account (which you probably already have) and you would be subject to a daily quota (unless you enable billing)

Even with billing on and 100's of millions of rows and 1000's of queries the charge is in the pennies.

Hi, someone from outside city government contacted me regarding getting historical property values for the South Bronx. (He found me through a report I did on Hunts Point.) At work, we usually get historical property values back to 2004 through PLUTO.

Questions:

Are assessment roles available digitally to the public?
How far back do they go, 2004?
Beyond that, how does one go about researching property values. Are there paper documents?

Chris thought that Steve Romalewski or Jessie Braden might be able to help. Do either of you have any insight?

Thanks,

Kevin
