All,
You may want to check FOIAmachine.org.  I just checked and DOF is there, along with the designated FOIA contact.

I also happened to ping FOIAmachine folks last week asking about when the code will be available in GitHub, they confirmed it will be available shortly, so it could be a platform that the community can use and customize.

Ralph, John, Kevin, and BetaNYC...

For the last few months, some of us have been compiling a list of needed datasets. In Sept, the City Council will hold a hearing and we are looking to present three things: 1. lack of data fidelity, 2. missing datasets that the community needs, 3. lack of a participatory infrastructure that solve some of NYC open data problems.

We have an NYC Open Data Working Group. I would love to get a few more people involved in this effort.

Coincidentally, NYC's open data is also tied to freedom of information requests. As part of the Transparency Working Group, BetaNYC is fighting to reform the City's FOIL practice. Currently, the Mayor's office doesn't think this is a good idea.

In light of that, we've been debating the idea of building our own public FOIL tracker and data catalog. This would provide us a way to join each other's FOIL requests and share in the fight.

As of now, the Mayor's office is open to working with us on a number of fronts. If we can provide reasonable requests, they are open to working with us on reasonable responses.

Now with all of that being said, how can WE be the Open Data and Transparency Board?

Speaking of which, I want NYCHA data.

Thanks John.

Can I include you in the list of people that would want this data.

It would be helpful if we had a group of concerned citizens that agree to sign on for the request AND a system where we  track the request and the responses and the people that respond within the NYC DOF etc.

Because what usually happens is you ask for some information.

You get a letter or email many months later saying that NYC DOF will supply the information in 45 days

Then 45 days pass and you have to remember to remind them about the request and then the process starts all over again.

If we had a public transparent with the real names and offices responsible for the production of the data we could let everyone see what a good or bad system we have.

Is there such a system today?

For goodness sake, I see all the effort made in Campaign Finance reform.  Why? possibly because those running for office want to make sure that they are not ganged up upon by other  large money interests.

From listening to the hearings, it appears that current representatives ideal democracy is where the general public can easily text message money and contributions to them.  IS THAT DEMOCRACY?  BIZARRE!

We should have a Open Data and Transparency Board.  Do we have that?

Might it be worth FOILing the historical assessment data from DoF?
