Memorial Day: Acton to Shirley 38 miles

Start: Donelan's Supermarket in Acton.  Please park in the lot behind the store located at 48 Brook St, otherwise you may not find us.

This is a Charles River Wheelman ride called "Poppies and Rhymes." They are actually riding it on Saturday, May 24, but we will be riding it on Memorial Day instead. Why repeat a bike club ride? I am notorious for wanting to start a ride later than the clubs. They start at 9, or maybe earlier; I start at 10:30 or later. This Meetup is for people who want to relax a bit on their nights off or who just aren't really morning people.

You must average at least 12 mph; I average between 12 and 15 mph for the most part. If there are many sign-ups, we will split into multiple groups with somewhat different speeds in this range. This is a 38 mile ride, so bring a road bike or hybrid. A mountain bike is not acceptable unless you can do 40 miles at a moderate pace. If this is you, then you know who you are.

Route map, cue sheet, and GPS info: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/4768120  Street arrow:

I will print reformatted "skinny"cue sheets on the day of the ride with a bit of extra info, but you may also print a cue sheet from the Ride With GPS site that is almost the same.

My car is a blue Hyundai Accent, and I will leave extra printed cue sheets on my windshield for any latecomers who want to ride on their own.

A forecast of steady rain during the ride time of 10:30-2:30 cancels. A few drops here and there, and the ride is still on.

Lunch will be at 22.3 miles at the Main Street Cafe, 159 Main Street, Groton.

Honestly, I thought the ride went down too many main streets with route numbers. Some of the main streets were nice, but Route 40 was a bit scary with the cars' high speeds and curves. It's not a ride I would want to repeat; there are better ones in this area. It still was a good ride.

It was a beautiful ride, and the group was relaxed and interesting. Thanks to Rob, and Alex for making it happen.

Not sure why, but I hardly slept a wink last night, am exhausted and will not be able to keep up. Apologies for bailing last minute...I was really looking forward to the ride. Have a good time!

It is raining now..when do you make a decision about cancelling the ride? I was planning to leave my house around 9:30 am.. please let us know!

No cancellation. The rain should let up by the start time. Besides, rain on a hot day is refreshing.

All the forecasts that I saw suggest the rain ending about the time we are starting.

The temperature during our ride will be 76 to 84 degrees Fahrenheit (24 to 29 C). There is no chance of rain. A sleeveless shirt, sunscreen, and extra water will make a comfortable ride.

Somehow, a chance of thunderstorms crept into the forecast; although the worst chance appears to be before the ride starts.

I did this ride with the CRW on Saturday and it was nice. Wish I could go again.

Looks like a great ride. I may decide to do this ride earlier and follow it from Ride With GPS. I have an event in the afternoon and I afraid I may not make it back on time if I start at 10:30.

Thanks to the Charles River Wheelmen, the ride is public and they painted fresh street arrows; so this can be ridden anytime in the next few months.

This might be a stupid question, but I haven't done a ride with a group before, so my question is how do you get back to your car in Acton if you end in Groton? Im hoping to join this time!

The ride will return to Acton after lunch which is how you get back to your car!

      May 25, 2014

    • Alex G.

The ride is so long that a lunch halfway is necessary. A 25-mile ride would have the lunch be afterward.

Hi. Love to join. Is this a casual ride or high performing pace?

    May 25, 2014

    • Alex G.

It's moderate pace, not quite casual and not all-out, with a minimum of 12 mph. If I could get a second leader some day (I'll talk to Rob Fox about this), I would have him lead the slower group.

Commuter Rail Service: I have just been informed that they are having full commuter rail service on the Fitchburg Line for Memorial Day weekend even though the line is under construction during other weekend. The schedule for Memorial Day is available here:

    http://www.mbta.com/schedules_and_maps/rail/lines/?route=FITCHBRG&direction=O&timing=memorial&RedisplayTime=Redisplay+Time

If you have no car, you can also request a ride here.
