Mothers Day around Turtle Rock

Happy Mothers Day to all the moms!

We'll meet at Bonita Creek Park and take the bike path up to MacArthur, and continue on MacArthur to Bonita Canyon Drive.  Left on BCD to Shady Canyon and a right turn.  Get on the sidewalk at some point as we'll be taking the Shady Canyon bike trail just before the entrance to Bommer Canyon Park.  This trail will wind through some scenic fields and offer some very nice views, especially at the top of the long downhill just before the Quail Hills rest area.

After a brief stop at Quail Hills we head back onto the street to Quail Hills Parkway and then around the traffic circle onto Laguna Canyon Road.  Stay on LCR to the San Diego Creek Bike Trail -- the 2nd entry    across the creek -- and then to the end at Pacifica.  Continue across Pacifica on Spectrum, around the park to the traffic circle and Starbucks.  We'll kick back at Starbucks for a cup and head count.

Leaving Starbucks we head out on Spectrum to Irvine Center Drive and turn left for a short distance to Alton Parkway.  Right on Alton and back to the SDCT -- again crossing over the creek before entering the trail.  Stay on the SDCT to Jeffrey Road, then off on Jeffrey and up to the Walnut Trail.  We'll take the Walnut Trail to Harvard Ave., then down Harvard to Warner Ave.  Right on Warner and then a quick right onto the Lower Peters Canyon Trail.  The LPCT back to the SDCT, then towards the Back Bay.  About 4 miles down the SDCT to the Bonita Creek Trail and back to the start!

All in all about 24 miles, all on paved bike trails or streets with bike lanes.  Please go over the route map and have a general idea of where you're going, and note any bail out points should you need to leave the ride early.

 Route Map:

Late arrivals will have to catch up.

Looks like summer's here to stay! It warmed up quickly. Good thing the climbs were out of the way early on. There was the nice run down Shady Canyon after reaching the peak, and time to regroup at Quail Hills trailhead before the jaunt to Starbucks for a real break. Lots of rabbits, squirrels, and lizards out, but no rattlesnakes this time! We found the Walnut Trail to be passable at Culver, despite the signs posted to the contrary! Many in the group hadn't been on the short stretch of Peters Canyon Trail from Warner before, and even fewer has seen me get a flat tire! Thanks to all for waiting a few minutes, and especially to Matt for his assistance. I still don't know what I ran over, but it got through the new tire, tire liner, and left a neat little puncture in the tube!

Well balanced ride with the climbs upfront. The stop at Starbucks made the ride tirelessly. Great cyclist as always.

As of today, May 5th, the Walnut Trail was still closed at Culver for construction. If it is still closed when we get there, we will detour south on Culver to Deerfield (getting onto the sidewalk on the east side of Culver asap after leaving the trail). We will cross Culver at Deerfield and stay on Deerfield to Flagstone, then turn right for 2 blocks back to the Walnut Trail and compete the route as posted.
