This is the first in a series of what I hope will be quarterly "Bike Overnight" trips, where we'll take our bikes on out of town rides. We'll either camp or stay in hotels, depending on the location, the weather, and time of year. For this first one, we plan to camp along the way.
We'll meet at the Irvine Metrolink station Saturday morning at 10:00am. My husband will provide the SUV to carry our coolers, tents, overnight bags and spare bike parts. He will meet us later. The rest of us will start our adventure pedaling the 20-25 miles to San Clemente where we'll have lunch at a casual place. After lunch, we continue another 3-4 miles to San Mateo Campground (click here for campground information). Check in is 2:00pm. Once we have our camp set up, we have the rest of the afternoon to either head to the beach, do more cycling on our own, go into town for some sightseeing or stay at camp and relax. That evening we'll make a camp fire.
Sunday morning after breakfast we pedal 20-25 miles to our final destination, Oceanside. We'll be going through Camp Pendelton, so you must have your ID. Depending on our arrival time we either have lunch or do some sightseeing.
From the Oceanside Metrolink station we take the train back to Irvine. Trains leave Oceanside at 1:20, 2:50, 4:30 and 5:30pm. Let's plan on taking either the 1:20 or 2:50. We'll decide this in the morning. Forty-five minutes later we're in Irvine, where our SAG support vehicle will meet us with our gear.
It will be a fun weekend of biking, camping and camaraderie with fellow cyclists.
Come join us!
