Back Bay with a prelude

We'll take a scenic ride around the Newport Back Bay after we ride up the SDCT from Bill Barber Park to Laguna Canyon Road, up and over the freeway to Quail Hills Parkway, and our first stop at the Quail Hills Trail Head.  After a short break we continue along the Quail Hills and Sand Canyon trails, through William Mason Park, then back onto the SDCT at Harvard and University.  From there it's down to the Bay, heading clockwise, to the parking area at Newport Dunes where we'll cross the bridge to Bayside Drive and continue to PCH.  A right turn onto PCH to Dover, and then a right on Dover to Castaways Lane (16th St).  Turn right and go through the church parking lot to Castaways park and on to the USMC statue that overlooks the bay.  We'll pause for a bit, then continue along the trail to Santiago Drive, and along to Galaxy Drive where we turn right.  Stay on Galaxy until it ends at Santiago, then turn right to Irvine Ave.  A right turn on Irvine then it's onto the Bayview Trail and back to the SDCT, and then up to Bill Barber Park.

This is a 28 mile, mostly flat ride.  There are a couple of short uphills that we've done a number of times before.

•   We will start at 8:30 sharp, so be there and ready to go -- or plan to catch up!

• Don't forget your helmet, water, snacks, and a spare tube.

• As always YOU are responsible for knowing the route.

Easy Day. Did the shorter ride around the back bay and felt good enough to have done the longer ride.

Thank you Mike, for leading an incredible ride - I loved the route!!!! But, most of all, I enjoyed spending my morning with such a great group of people!!!

This ride worked out well for the group. 9 went on the ride as posted, and 6 opted to do the shorter tour around the Back Bay. It was a warm and humid day, but we were well ahead of the hottest part, and were able to complete the ride without mishap! The group enjoyed meeting our newest member, Paula, and welcoming Gina back from her Navy tour in Korea. A bunch of us went to a near by El Pollo Loco for refreshment and had a good time.

So, if this is my 1st time riding with this group, and I am not familiar with the route, am I basically on my own with a cue sheet?
