Irvine/Back Bay Double Loop

This ride can be broken down into two short rides over trails we've done many times.

We'll head over to the SDCT and turn right, staying on the trail to Laguna Canyon Road.  Turn right, over the freeway to Quail Hills Parkway, another right and to the Starbucks in the shopping center for a short break.  Leaving Starbucks we carefully head for the Quail Hills Trail, using the bike path and being very mindful of traffic around the circle.  Stay on the bike trail to and through William Mason Park, then across University at Harvard and back on the SDCT and down to the Back Bay.

At Bonita Creek Park Tail you can turn and head back to the start and the cars, for a ride of just under 17 miles.  If not stopping at this point, continue down the SDCT and around the bay, clockwise, and turn right on Eastbluff Drive.  Another right on Back Bay Drive, fly down the hill and keep crankin' to Newport Dunes where we'll take the pontoon bridge across the water to Bayside Drive.  Right at PCH and again at Dover, then up to Castaways Park -- be in your low, low gears for this short climb.  A quick stop at the USMC statue, then continue on the trail to Santiago Drive.  Make a right turn on Galaxy, wind around and back to Santiago, then turn right to Irvine Ave.  A right on Irvine Avenue for about 100 feet, then back on the bike trail to complete the loop of the Back Bay.  A short hop up the SDCT to Bonita Park Trail and back to the cars, 27.7 miles total.

As always, be sure to bring your helmet, water, snacks, and a spare tube.  We leave at 8:30 sharp, so please be on time!  Take a good look at the route map, and zoom in on any areas in which you need to see detail -- remember, YOU are responsible for knowing the route.

What a wonderful ride with a great group! I also liked the two distance option with the added hill bypass! Great planning and outstanding safety!

I'm still recovering from my knee injury so can't ride but I was wondering if you will be meeting up for lunch after the ride? I'm in to meetup if that's the case :)

Ok so where are we meeting? Can someone please call me too?

      1 · October 13, 2013

    • Marla B.

Pam, I was going to go to Bonita Creek Park around 10:30-11:00 am to get a consensus on who wants to meetup after the ride and where to go from there. There are several places nearby. To name a few there is the Champagne Bistro and Deli, Panera Bread, Chipotle, Quiznos, Wildfish Seafood Grill??

I'll just do the loop from Benita Creek Park and back to Benita Creek Park. When I did this ride before, I found the 17 miles was plenty for me.

I thought it might work for you! Maybe it'll even draw out some newbies, too.

I re-injured an old injury of 2 bulging discs in my neck. I may not be able to make it. I will take my bike out and try to ride it before Sunday. I am so disappointed. Orthopedic doctor wants me to stay off a road bike but I really want to ride with you on Sunday!!! Crossing my fingers....

    October 10, 2013

    • Marla B.

I can't ride either Pam so maybe join us for lunch :)

      October 11, 2013

    • Judy S.

Pam, i have a casual bike that might work for you. It has knobbies on at the moment, so it will be slower. Let me know if you want me to bring it. But Mike's right, don't push your luck.

I will be also doing the first Bonita creek loop and back to Bonita not the back bay. Change of plans my daughter is celebrating her birthday party sooner so I must get back sooner :-(. I won't be doing the back bay!

ok awesome. I'm about 75% sure I'm coming, but just seeing if a few friends want to join as well. I'll RSVP probably tomorrow night once I figure everything out.

Are there a lot of big hills on this route as well? I'm from Long Beach, so not too familiar with this area...just trying to decide if I want to bring my single speed or my road bike

      October 11, 2013

    • Mike W.

You'll want your road bike. No big hills, but a couple of short climbs

      October 11, 2013

  • Jackie Y.

The Cue sheet states we go right on University and then to SDCT is that correct? No mention of Laguna Canyon and going over the freeway on the cue sheet.

    October 8, 2013

    • Ed W.

Jackie, when leaving the park we go right on University to the traffic light and then cross University and take the bike path to SDCT. We go on the SDCT to laguna Canyon Road amd cross over the 405 on this street. I'll be riding a little slower than the group so I'll keep you on the correct path.
