Bill Barber to Bill Barber via Creek-Bay-Canyon 27 & 18 Mile Options

This is a beautiful ride with light hills. We will start out from B. Barber Park onto the SDCT for a short ways and exiting onto Main St. following it down thru the business district and past John Wayne Airport’s runway.

If we are lucky maybe a plane will take off as we ride under :-)

At Red Hill Ave we will turn LEFT as we pass A Road Bike for You Bike Store and head toward the ocean. Red Hill will turn into Santa Ana Ave. These roads have a dedicated bike lane except for a small area on Red Hill as we cross Bristol (we will regroup here if needed to ride this section as a group).

This is an easy ride down to the coast most of it in a neighborhood type setting with posted speed limits at 30mph (slow cars). We will then make a LEFT onto 16th St. which will take us down to Castaways Park for a quick look at the Awesome Views!

As we leave Castaways we will take the path down. When we get to the corner of PCH we will turn LEFT and stay on the sidewalk over the bridge to Bayside Dr. and make a LEFT -- USE CAUTION AT THIS INTERSECTION, DON'T BUNCH UP, AND DON'T BLINDLY FOLLOW THE RIDER IN FRONT OF YOU.  Ffollow Bayside Dr. thru the guard gate and over the Newport Dunes Bridge.

This is where we will be stopping for snacks and bathroom break. There is a nice grassy area and a gazebo to relax also tables and a water fountain to refill our bottles if needed. So bring some munchies!

As we leave Newport Dunes refueled and with the wind at our backs, we head into Back Bay. This is one of the nicest areas to ride in all of Orange County. Water, wildlife, great weather and fresh air! What more could you ask for?

At the end of Back Bay we will regroup at the look out.

We will then make a RIGHT onto Eastbluff which will turn into Ford and then to Bonita Canyon Dr. staying in the bike lane down to Shady canyon. At Shady canyon we go RIGHT onto the side path and thru beautiful Shady Canyon with great views and cacti. As we descend we will stop at Quail Hill Trailhead for a bathroom/water break.

As we leave, stay on Quail Hill Trailhead over the 405 onto Jeffery back to the SDCT and back to the start/stop point.

Enjoy!

18 Mile option you would stay on SDCT back to B.Barber Park insted of going RIGHT at Eastbluff.

Well, I thought I was set...washed my gear before bed and asked hubby to put clothes in dryer before he turned in two hours after me. As you can imagine...he never did it so I am staring at them drying as I type this...won't be dry in time to drive there and ride. You have no idea how bummed I really am. Was looking forward to your ride. Will have ride local instead. Enjoy and be safe. See you all in two weeks after military drill weekend coming up.

New 18 mile option added. This would be perfect for any riding level or if you are allergic to hills :-)

I will be leaving the posted ride at 16th Street and Irvine to head back to the start. Have not been doing much riding for the past month and a half.

Glad you can make it! I just added a 18 mile option. It would be about the same mileage as heading back from 16th and the only hill would be the small one coming out of Back Bay. Looking forward to meeting you!
