San Diego Bike Overnight

San Diego boasts some incredible bike paths. Let's go enjoy two of them. On Saturday, Mission Bay; and on Sunday, the Bayshore Bikeway.

Mission Bay is a scenic and wonderfully laid back place with a bicycle path all around it.  If you have a hybrid, you might want to bring that instead of the fancy road bike, but that's up to you.

We'll begin our ride Saturday morning at 10:00am, starting from the visitors center at the north-eastern end of Mission Bay, right off the freeway.

We'll ride at a casual pace in a clock-wise direction for the approx. 15 mile route. Since the bike path is shared with beach-goers and walkers, roller skaters, etc. we'll need to be mindful that we are "sharing the road". This is a leisurely paced day. No rush. Instead, we're here to enjoy the cool sea breeze and beautiful views of one of San Diego's best parks. Since it's the off season, I'm hoping for less foot traffic than we might have if we were doing this in the summer.

Here's the route (coming soon).

We'll break up our day near Belmont Park, where we can relax, enjoy the amusement park, people watch, and have lunch. I'll try to book the cabana again if possible. Pack a light sweater or sweatshirt in case it gets cool. Make sure to bring a bike lock with you. Then we'll continue around the Bay back to our starting point. After we relax and shower, we can decide what to do for the evening.  Old Town San Diego is always fun for walking around and getting some Mexican food.

Sunday, we'll pack up our things and check out, and then drive to the Ferry Landing, where we'll park our cars. From there, we'll begin our 24 mile ride down along Harbor Blvd., through Chula Vista, past Imperial Beach and over to Coronado Island. We'll stop at the Hotel Del Coronado to take in this beautiful historic hotel and beach, then take the Ferry back to the start. The Coronado Brewing Company is recommended and might be a nice place to enjoy a late lunch after our ride. But if you know of any better alternatives near this site, please do suggest them!

Here's the route for Sunday.

Arrival: You can arrive on Friday evening if you like, or just drive down Saturday morning, as I will. You can just drive down for the day and join us for one or the other ride if you don't want to "bike overnight". Just please let me know on which day you will be participating so I know to expect you.

Accommodations: I will be making hotel reservations for myself near Campland for Saturday night since I know a couple of our members will be staying there. I'll find a hotel that's modestly priced and let you know (see comments section below).

For tent camping, the best place is Campland in the northern part of Mission Bay. Visit fellow BOCCG member Jeff's camping website for more information on camping.  If you are RVing, there are more options available to you, all of which can also be found on Jeff's site. Whichever you choose, please make your own reservations.

Rain will cancel this event (and hopefully not again).

Thank you Christina for your excellent planning. This trip was so much fun! Fun times riding together, hanging out, eating out and going out! The weather was nice and cool and since it was early in the season there weren't many people on the paths & on the streets this weekend. Great views of all of San Diego! Can't wait to do it again! <3 <3 <3

Got a starting point: the visitors center. Lots of parking, a restroom nearby, and right off the 5 Freeway.

For those interested in hotel accommodations, I've found the Red Roof Inn at $79 ($71 w/AAA discount) and a Best Western at $116 that are close by and reasonably priced. There are many others, but well over $120/nt.
