Race against Sun Trans bus route #8

Friday April 11th at 7:30am. This ride is to prove that commuting by bicycle is not only faster than the bus but healthier for the rider and the environment. This ride will also show the viability of low cost individual transportation to reduce high cost bus transportation. Ride starts at the nw corner of kolb and Broadway at 7:30 am and goes straight down broadway to downtown. Speed is as fast as you can go and distance is about 7 miles mostly downhill. Meet at Hotel Congress after the ride for coffee and discussion. Ride open to electric assist, tandems, recumbents, and regular bikes. Call Ken for details or questions. [masked]

Dan- I plan to start ahead and stay there after the first few bus stops. I have hopped around buses on regular rides and that could be the case for riders not keeping a 20 plus pace. We could also bribe the driver to stay behind us. Seriously, I see no more problems than our normal rides along Broadway when buses are running frequently and riders use common sense and caution. I'm sure there will be some blah blah about helmets being worn and all traffic rules being obeyed, but when the bus stops in the bus/bike lane, forcing overtaking bikes to either stop behind it or take the next traffic lane to the left (or the sidewalk - eek!), there could be some less-than-safe action.

Mark- We plan on riding legally and observing all traffic rules. Dan- Since we will riding when bus ridership is highest, during the am rush, and not against the express bus, I expect to win by a 5 or 10 minutes. I will be riding an electric assist, which is faster and will probably average 23 to 25 mph. Ken

I race that bus frequently from Pantano to Tucson Blvd., and leapfrogging it is a pain in the butt. I usually do pretty well, but there are only like two or three stops between Swan and Country Club, and if I hit the lights wrong, it can end badly.
