It's that time of the year when we can have enough daylight to do the Iron Butt Association ride for our certificates, license plate backers and pins.
I'll be riding along as a witness this year to verify everybody makes the event. Others that have already qualified can come along as witnesses (no fee, but does not go in the official IBA file - if you're already in there, it doesn't really matter)
The ride will start gassed up, with kickstands up and rolling at 5am from Starbucks at Northgate next to McDonalds and the I-5 onramp.
I will be taking all names, photos, mileage, odometer readings, etc. Everybody must be responsible for keeping ALL of their gas receipts and turning them in to me. Bring a sealable envelope to place all of your receipts with your name on it at the end of the ride.
The fee is $45 and includes the certification, licence plate backer, a SaddleSore 1000 pin and IBA Sticker.
Ride difficulty: EXTREME!
Iron Butt is a rite of passage for the hard core motorcyclist. This is a test of your endurance, machine and beating the clock.
There will be few comfort breaks, gas stops only as needed and a very short lunch/dinner break. You can expect to be on your machine for at least 17 hours. If we are back in Yakima before sunset, we'll take the canyon highway detour for a nice evening ride before the final leg from Ellensburg to Seattle.
Riding with the group gives safety in case of any serious issues (crashes, etc), but if you or your bike can't make the ride for whatever reason, you'll pretty much be on your own for getting your bike out and back home, as everybody on this ride is trying to qualify within a timeframe.

"Have you considered making a second day 500 mile ride...it seemed to me, that was the true test." - Speed Demon
LOL. A 500 mile ride alone is a true test for the rest of us!
Hi Mark - the ride on day one is 1000 miles in 24 hours. The 'bun-burner' part of the event isn't posted this year, but may be an addendum if anybody wants to step up to do that...personally, I don't - it was the hardest part of the ride, and waking up on 2 hours of sleep after riding 1000 miles was worse than boot camp!
I will be on my 2003 V-rod, it isn't great on gass, needing to stop every hundred miles or so with it's little 3 gal tank.
I would organize a 500 mile day two for the bun-burner portion...if anyone is interested.
If we end up only doing a one day ride, on the way home we should stop at the denny's in Issaquah, for a brownie and ice cream.
If you're a smoker, remember if we stop for 5 minutes to smoke a cigarette at every gas fill up, that's 12x5 minutes or an HOUR of time that is added on to the ride. Maybe bring a pack of nicorette gum?
Hi Greg - I have an 883... you're a brave soul to do the Iron Butt on a Sporty - even a 1200! You shouldn't have any problem staying awake! :P
No way I even attempt this on my sport bikes, however could make it on a Spyder. Are trikes welcomed?
I'm watching the weather closely and hoping it breaks by the end of the week. If it looks like it's going to be wet there and back, I'll move the ride out one week to the 12th. Stay posted for updates
Weather changes from day to day and place to place far too much to count on one way or another, I vote to ride reguardless of the weather and hope for the best.
Hi Steven and Teresa - I'm checking the weather the entire route... not just in Western WA. If it's going to be wet a good part of the trip there and back, it's not only unpleasant and unsafe, it slows the trip down considerably.
Long range predictions shows for better weather on the 12th, but I'll wait and watch...will make final call on Thursday. Those of you that want to, can still do the ride this weekend if my plan is to move it. Keep posted.
I would be more than happy to host a rain or shine ride, if you decide to wait for the following weekend. People should be warned that it may take a little longer, I don't like to ride fast on the freeway, because I refuse to get a speeding ticket while traveling in a straight line.
Current forecast is now (Wed) showing better weather this weekend than next for most of the trip. The current forecast is if it rains, it will be early on Sat in W.Washington and the rest of the trip it will be overcast...great riding weather for a long haul so the sun isn't in our face there and back. I'm checking NOAA, Weather.com and accuweather in Seattle, Spokane, Missoula and Yakima - for my information. Stay posted for updates
I will be there at N. Gate around 5am gased up full of snacks/water and have my GMRS set to Ch 17.7 for the none chatterbox riders. Mark and I will be chatting the whole way if ya would like to join us.
I spent the morning completing my annual trip to the motorcycle shop. I am the proud owner of new tires, new brake pads, and a working speedometer/odometer. It may sound strange, but I think my kick stand even works better. It always seems like my bike is a little faster when I leave the shop...I think it's just in a hurry to get to tomorrows ride!
...and a working speedometer/odometer....
Hmm.... I never would have thought you...
:)
hope all of you have a wonderful day . i will be thinking of you and pray for a safe ride .
I got home fine. I tried to get a message off before the battery in my phone died. I hope you figured I was OK. Looked for you guys, but never saw you. I think I passed you and kept ahead with my very quick stops. Got home at 10:30. I did my own individual paperwork, so I have that covered. It was a cool ride with all of the different environments we went through. I even got to ride Canyon Road!
Some of my pics have the date/time stamp, some don't. I used 2 cameras but all the photos are in chronological order for the day.
My total mileage for the day (including to/from my house) was 1,042 miles. To put this into perspective, Seattle to San Francisco is only 800 miles. Dallas to Minneapolis is about 940. Amsterdam to Rome is 1,036. I'm beginning to understand why I woke up feeling a bit crappy today :-) Sooo worth it though, what a fantastic experience! Thanks everyone, especially the leads!!
Was a great run! Scratch that off my list now. :) I tried uploading some photos, but tool kept crashing on me. So, I uploaded to Skydrive with the other photos if anyone want to download all in original form or view a nice slideshow: http://tinyurl.com/meetup5june![]()
