Stonehenge ride for Shutterbugs!

  • This location is shown only to members

  • It's currently looking like excellent weather for the Solstice and the opportunity to get some amazing photographs at the Stonehenge Monument at Maryhill, WA.

I did this ride three different times and only once was able to get the clear sunrise to see it actually work - and that was three days before the solstice, so I'm hoping to get the shadows to all line up perfectly this time!

I'm planning on leaving Friday afternoon and returning on Saturday morning (leaving there after breakfast).  Overnight accomodations will be arranged once there is an idea of how many are interested in doing this ride (I may just camp).

(best photo I took 3 years ago - yes, that's my bike inside!)

Pulling the plug on this again this year...3 years in row now! :(
Will try this again next June 21st. I'll post an alternate ride for Saturday either later tonite or tomorrow morning. - Sorry about that!

So is this ride officially called off?

    June 19, 2014

Yeah - waited until today to decide for sure. Looks like it's cloudy in morning & burning off in the afternoon, which defeats the purpose of being there at sunrise.

It's not looking like conditions will be on our side for photos on Saturday morning.

Accomodations are also scarce - I'm opting to change this ride to something that is a day-ride (like maybe the Wild Horses Wind Farms & Petrified Forest?). My Internet is down until my new router arrives, so I'm on limited access. If you need to contact me, please call/text me at[masked]

    Is this an overnight trip?

    • Seattle P.

It can be unless folks want to do a night-ops ride, leaving at midnight and arriving at 4:30am. I'm down for either.

Yes Lee , this is a over night trip. With a Very early get up time to see how it works. Pat and I was able to see it a few years ago. YOU HAVE TO BE THERE to understand

Once in a lifetime! I better bring the camera and not just my cell phone. :-)

I remember as a kid in high school, our science teacher took a group on a field trip to see the solar eclipse over that monument. I didn't go, but have kicked myself for 35 years for missing it. Those types of chances don't come around often.

As an FYI, I'm watching the weather for this date. If it isn't looking clear/crisp I may scrap it for another time & do a closer ride this date instead. It's a fairly long haul with the intent to get a rare photo, but if the weather isn't cooperative then it's kind of pointless (other than it being a great ride).

I pulled all the comments from folks that can't go. I want to keep this thread open for those that CAN go and any questions they may have. For me, it's all about getting there at the right time on the right day with the right conditions to get that once-in-a-lifetime photo.

That looks really cool, but I will have my two boys (ages 9 and 6) that weekend, and I don't have a sidecar rig (yet). I could be interested in tagging along in a box with 4 wheels and my boys though, something to think about...

Bring them in the car if you'd like.

Looks amazing, I'd love to do this and will try to arrange schedules.
