Labor Day Weekend Amtrak to Truckee & Ride Around Lake Tahoe~ Motel or Camp Trip

  • to

  • Emeryville Amtrak

5885 Horton Street, Emeryville, Ca (map)

    37.840675 -122.291389

  • Either at the train station or at a carpool meetup spot to be determined
  • It's called "America's Most Beautiful Ride" for a reason!

72 miles, 3800 feet climb, 6500 feet altitude

Cross-posted with NorCal Bicycle Camping and Touring and Blazing the Urban Trail, SF.

I'm choosing Labor Day Weekend so people don't have to take off from work.  This is the best weekend for accommodation selection and availability at the moment.

The beautiful Zephyr train to Truckee does NOT allow bikes AT ALL, boxed or not, but we have enough drivers who are willing to bring up the bikes and camping gear.

I'm hoping for a few people to join me for a one-way train trip, currently 43.00, 38.70 with AAA discount, and a ride back with the drivers on Monday.

If we don't have at least 2 "trainsters" or enough drivers, we will all carpool.

Sat: 9 AM Emeryville Zephyr to Truckee, currently 43.00.  Arrive 2:30 PM   Pick up the trainsters and drive 12 miles to Tahoe City motel or campsite.  There are 2 campsites in Tahoe City, subject to availability.

Eagle Falls Hike at Emerald Bay, @ 2.5 miles RT to lake.

Dinner together Tahoe City at Hacienda del Lago, Lakefront Mexican.

Sun: Ride 72 miles around Lake Tahoe.  Dinner together in Tahoe City or camp BBQ (there's a Safeway in Tahoe City)

Mon: Breakfast on your own.  All carpool home, including trainsters.  Optional Truckee riverside easy ride before departure.

    Lodging options:

2 day minimum!  Please book your own room or coordinate with someone to share an accommodation.

    http://www.tahoecityinn.com

    http://www.peppertreetahoe.com

    http://www.americasbestvalueinn.com/bestv.cfm?idp=1013

http://www.mothernaturesinn.com [masked] per person, double occupancy, includes tax)  I know this adorable inn and have reserved two Double Bed rooms and one King.  There are more Kings and Queens available.  1 week cancellation policy.  I have reserved a two bed, two person room for myself, but you can change over the other rooms to your credit card, under Dalton.

    Closest camping options:

William Kent Campground (530)[masked]  (2 miles away)

Tahoe State Recreation Area (530)[masked]  (in town)

It's important to note that this ride is at 6500 ft. but we'll have a day to acclimate.

Hydration and electrolyte replacement are very important! Helmets and spare tube required. Must have power bars, snacks, a bottle of water and a bottle of electrolytes at all times.  We'll make plenty of stops as needed.

Please put in the comment section your preference train or carpool and how many bikes/people you can take. We will consolidate the cars once we know how many we have.

Join or login to comment.

If you still decide to go, I'm sorry I can't offer my leadership, but enjoy yourselves.

Please let me know you got this.

    Hi Everyone,

I HATE to do this, but I am canceling the Tahoe trip due to the unpredictability of air quality. Some may disagree with me, but the fire is only 30% contained and I spoke with our innkeeper just now and she said the smoke is off and on depending on the wind.

The good news for me, Marcus and Andy, is that despite the fact there are no refunds later than 1 week prior, they are giving us a rain check to reschedule. This will likely involve taking off a Friday. I hope to schedule 9/20-9/22 before risk of snow. Please see if you can get a rain check, too.

The other GREAT thing is that Amtrak will fully refund you or give a travel voucher IF you call 24 hrs in advance which means before 9am tomorrow. You have to go through a menu and persist until you get a live person. Just say "customer service" a bunch of times.

I DO hate to disappoint everyone, but whether or not you have asthma, it's a huge ride and heavy breathing will be involved.

Anyone have a bike spot left on their car? Let me know and I'll put you in touch with Shaun Houlihan from here-http://www.meetup.com/norcal-biketouring/events/125145362/

Update on air quality: I spoke to the inn keeper and campgrounds and there are no plans to close anything down. The air quality has been excellent to hazy. It all depends on the way the wind blows. We still have 6 days to monitor the situation and we can adjust our riding and hiking plans accordingly, but I won't be canceling this trip. Everything is booked up and there are no refunds. I have alternative activities in mind such as hiking Shirley Canyon at Squaw, and many other options.

Re: Rim Fire smoke-I think we have to see how things develop and also get first hand accounts. I have a firefighter relative in Truckee and I'll talk with him. We will have to see how things go over the next 5 days. Here's what I found:
Update Monday, Aug. 26: From the local website MyMotherLode:

The Tuolumne County Air Pollution Control District has extended the Air Quality Alert for Tuolumne County due to smoke impacts from the Rim Fire. The Air Quality Alert is now in effect until 12 PM on Wednesday.

Per another source: "Many air districts have issued health advisories as smoke settles over Northern California. While Yosemite Valley is clear, the Lake Tahoe basin is thick with smoke, and many outdoor activities have been canceled in Reno, Nev." http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/tuolumne-fire-yosemite-crews-bracing-strong-winds-20059824

Thought I would share the latest update on the effect that the Yosemite fire has on visibility/conditions in the Tahoe area. "As the 200-square-mile Rim Fire burns west of Yosemite National Park, smoke continues to be a problem for areas to the north and northeast—notably the Lake Tahoe basin and the Reno-Carson City area. Heavy smoke forced cancellation of a popular Lake Tahoe air show on Saturday, partly out of concern about visibility, partly out of concern for spectators who would be outdoors breathing unhealthy levels of particulate matter." http://blogs.kqed.org/newsfix/2013/08/23/rim-fire-update-smoke-spreads-from/

It's getting hard to keep track of all the emails that had been exchanged here and "Bay Area Cycling" group and also private messages that have gone on back and forth. From reading the postings it seems that a few of us want to ride with the group but also want autonomy. So it might be most helpful to know the time and location to meet you for the following: Hike for Saturday, Dinner on Saturday, Start of ride on Sunday. Plans for post-ride activities can be discussed in-person with those interested. Thanks.

One more spot opened up at Dan M's campsite. Contact him at http://www.meetup.com/norcal-biketouring/events/125145362/ if you're interested or leave a message here and I'll coordinate.

    Hi Cyclists~

We're about a week and a half away and I want to be sure everyone has a game plan for getting up to Tahoe and a place to stay.

We will ultimately meet at the Truckee Amtrak station at 2:30 PM (assuming the train is on schedule.) Then, we'll go from there. I am releasing the room(s) that have not been rented at Mother Nature's Inn tomorrow, Thursday. Franny

I am staying at the campground Dan arranged (William Kent, I believe, spot #77). Not sure about Barbara, though. Yes, I should have one more spot available if anyone is interested. I am leaving the Bay at 1.30 PM.

      August 25, 2013

    • Barbara

I'm staying at the Mother Nature's Inn. Btw - Franny, I looked at the route. It seems to be a straightforward loop. I'd like to start and end w/ everyone, but otherwise go at my own pace. :)

    Franny,
Aubrey reserved a hostel about 10 miles from where I initially reserved a motel room. I'm not sure if I'm going to train it to Tahoe or drive/carpool. I will talk it over with Aubrey and let you know. The train sounds fun and a lot less stress than driving, hope I can train it out somehow.
    Thanks,
    Waily

Wally, I forgot Dan (the first transfer) asked to claim a bike spot in my carpool group driven by Marcus. Most are driving, so I'm sure there will be many options. Look above in the comments to connect with people at the different meetups who are joining us.

Yes, but at Incline Village, we hug the lake.

    Share a room anyone?
    Carpool anyone?

I have a driver that can take your bike, and we three can drive back to Oakland/BART. That car will be full with 3 bikes.

Just returned from trips so kinda late in rejoining the conversation. But what's the current availability for room vs camping options amongst people who are going? Any spaces left on either? Please let me know cost for each. I plan to drive so that I can explore before and/or after. Thx.

Hey Aubrey, I know that Dan's camp site filled. Also, Mary-Lynn was working on one. They are both at this Meetup Group and you can emaiil them directly or leave messages to get the latest updates.

Would anyone be interested in sharing a room with me since $130 is too steep for just one night for just myself? Just wanting to weigh my options and see if I can join. Thanks.

I live in downtown Berkeley. Still trying to figure out travel arrangements b/c I don't have a car. I'd be cool w/ car pooling and sharing gas/tolls. I'm not camping.

      July 16, 2013

    • Franny

There are several people signed up here with cars, too. I know you can share a ride with someone. http://www.meetup.com... Post a message and send a private email If Zuzana and you can work something out, great! If you still have problems, let me know. There are two more groups coming. Also, call one of the hotels. I have 2 rooms on reserve at Mother Nature's Inn, but mine is #9! :)

    From Dan M:
Greetings all - just booked the 2 nights at William Kent campground (site near but not next to bathroom). Total price is $54 for up to 6 people/2 cars. As I'm taking the train up, that means i can support 5 people/2 cars more on this reservation. If interested, respond to this comment.

Hi cyclists~As I mentioned to Cristina, everyone should book their own accommodations and talk to each other about sharing campsites or double bed hotel rooms if you're on a budget. I would act sooner than later as it is Labor Day weekend. Check with people
    here:http://www.meetup.com/norcal-biketouring/events/125145362/
    here: http://www.meetup.com/sfurbantrail/events/125183302/

We have plenty of drivers, and so far two train travelers...hope more will come on the train one-way! Beautiful ride.

Hi Franny, I am planning on driving and can take some bags for people. I have Friday off, so I'll get there a day early and explore a bit. I willl most likely camp!

    1 · June 24, 2013

    • Franny

That's great. You should probably book a campsite at one of those suggestions soon as it's Labor Day Weekend. I know at least one other guy wants to camp, David, from the NorCal Biking and Touring Group. Check out his situation over there. I'll let him know about you, too. I'll try to help facilitate the accommodations, but everyone books on their own.

Just bought my Amtrak ticket, 38.70 with AAA discount! I think we'll have enough car/bike transport (I have room for one more bike.) You never know when the rates will go up, but they will!

  • Lincoln

I would lie to carpool. I can drive or ride.

    June 17, 2013

  • Zuzana P.

Franny, can I share a room with you? I am ready to submit the payment.

    June 17, 2013

    • Franny

The date is set now. If you can, call the inn to submit payment for the other 2 bed room, which is under my name. Marcus is coming, so we'll figure out the beds and who sleeps where depending on the number of men and women. So far we have one other woman coming. They don't charge the credit card until one week prior to arrival. Let me know if that's ok. Thanks!

When do you expect to confirm the dates? And do you know what is the latest time we can book Amtrak without cost increase?

    June 17, 2013

    • Franny

We have enough people signed up now Aubrey, so I'm going to keep the date as such. I have no idea about Amtrak increases...kind of like airlines.

      June 17, 2013

    • Franny

I will say that if you can get a driver for your bike confirmed, you should feel free to book your ticket. I am quite certain others including me will be tracking it.
