70 Mile Delta Ride to Sacramento

This one way ride has some spectacular views of the Sacramento river and delta. It is almost all flat with the exception of climbing over the Antioch Bridge. The ride will go through Pittsburg, Antioch, Isleton, Walnut Grove, Locke, Ryde, Freeport, and Sacramento. These areas are hot now so we'll wait for the weather to cool down a bit and do the ride in mid October.

This ride will be moderate/touring pace and will be a no drop ride. We will wait at turns or towns along the way.

Please bring a road bike, helmet (required), lights, spare tube, water, snacks, money for BART, AMTRAK, ID for Amtrak, and lunch (or bring your own lunch).

Google maps calls it 65 miles, so I built in a few more just in case. Once we get to Sacramento, we'll take Amtrak back to the Bay Area ($29 to Berkeley).

  • Our meeting point will be the North Berkeley BART station at 7:45 AM. The departure time is 8:06 AM.
  • Alternately you could take BART to Pittsburg/Baypoint and meet us there at 9:00 AM but be aware that Amtrak does not go to this area on our return.
  • Amtrak 4:40-6:12 and 5:40-7:12 (Sacramento to Berkeley) Other departure times are 3:35 PM and 7:10 PM.

Couple issues. 1) the road conditions 2) the pace was slower than expected for easy conditions. I did have a good time though.

I'll be leaving Balboa BART at 8:06, arriving Pittsburg 9:12. If anyone is coming from the city and wants to join me, I'll be on the second car from the back.

I've decided to not go this trip as my butt checks are hurting from my 30 mile bike on Friday, not sure they can take another 70. Gonna have to break in the Schwinn a bit more before I go for a longer ride, or get a different bike. Hope you plan another trip like this in the future!

    Hi all,

I forgot to add to the details of the ride an important thing to bring with you. This is a form of identification for the purchase of the Amtrak ticket. So please remember to bring it with you.

Also, please bring your bike lights as it will be dark when we return to Berkeley and if you intend to ride from Berkeley Amtrak to North Berkeley BART it is just over a mile you will need those lights.

The weather is supposed to be in the mid 70's with a 7 mph tailwind and I'm expecting a very good ride for Sacramento.

    See in the morning!

So as a heads up, I just got an email from clipper saying there was the possibility of a BART strike. Hopefully it won't happen, but if it does it could be a problem.

So are we biking from north berkeley to Pittsburg or taking bart?

      October 10, 2013

    • Fletcher Stump S.

Sounds like a strike won't happen before Monday so we should be in the clear. As I understand we are meeting at north Berkley, taking the train to Pittsburgh/Baypoint and then riding to Sacramento from there.

Hi! I've never done anything over 25 miles, and I have a mountain bike. Are you guys really strict about being on a road bike only? Just wanted to check. Thanks! :)

I actually suggest that you give it a try tomorrow, so that you understand... Seems like you are not convinced and really you shouldn't take other ppls advice blindly, your should try it. you can always turn back when got run out of steam, it's not like we are in the middle of nowhere

Hi all. For those meeting at N. Berkeley. Are we biking to Bay Point or BARTing there? I ask because the map shows 65 miles from Bay Point to Sacramento. If we are biking to Bay Point, how is that route?

Just FYI for other beginners like me, I biked the route this last weekend from Berkeley (can't make it the 13th, but loved the idea of riding to Sac). Great flat beginner route! We had very little traffic, no construction or other mayhem, and smooth sailing back on Amtrak.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know the capacity of the Amtrak bike car?

    September 27, 2013

Also, It may be that not everyone that is RSVPed can make the ride. This was posted way out in advance.

No reservations for the Capitol Corridor train.

      September 30, 2013

  • Zuzana P.

I have three 2for1 coupons for Capitol Corridor trains. That means 6 tix can be purchased the price of 3 adult, full fare tickets. I will call Capitol Corridor to get more info and fine print, but if anyone is interested, I am giving away two of the coupons for free.

Rico, many BART stations have parking lots, not sure which ones. But you can never be certain anywhere is 100% safe.

      September 16, 2013

    • Lincoln

Hi Rico, The North Berkeley BART station has a parking lot. I've never had a problem there. I'd actually rather park at a BART station than on a city street but nothing's a 100% guarantee.

I desperately want to go, but I stink on anything with an incline. Even rollers challenge me. I'm fine on flat land, and can go 100+ miles out. Thanks for the invite!

    September 16, 2013

    • cristina

Well, then that's your ride...its completely flat

Lincoln, the map link doesn't work. Did you mean to link to this one? http://www.mapmyride.com/us/bay-point-ca/corrected-sacramento-route-143518469

Have you done this before? I live out in Oakley and have driven over the Antioch bridge many times but do not recall any bike lanes or am I just blind?

    July 22, 2013

    • Lee T.

There is no official bike lane, but the shoulder is fairly wide and is separated by a bright white line. Cars and trucks seem to be good about giving as wide a berth as they can. I don’t think anyone who's done it felt terrified, but, as you point out, there's no official bike lane.

Google Streetview shows it fairly clearly :-)

Yay, the perfect ride for me! Thanks Lincoln.

Sounds great, Lincoln! May also have a conflict, but Yes for now, and I will be one to meet you at Pittsburg/Bay Pt. BART.
