Mt. Diablo via Northgate (Pleasant Hill BART)

Conquer the summit of the tallest peak in the East Bay, Mt. Diablo, 3849 ft.  They say that from the top, the horizon represents the curvature of the earth!  You can also go to the "saddle" or ranger station and not go all the way up.

This is an out and back route, so you can bail out at any point  Many cyclists do return after reaching the ranger station since the last 4.5 miles to the summit are quite steep.  After the descent, we can finish at BART or take an optional extension down the popular Iron Horse Trail to Alamo or Danville to a cafe.

Details: 33 mile or 48 mile options with 4000 feet elevation gain.

Bring: Water, lytes, food, helmet, tube, strong legs.

Planned stops: BART Starbucks, Ranger Station (restrooms/water,) Summit/Visitors' Center (restrooms/water)  Bring your own food or buy some at the start of the ride, as there is not food on the way up, only water.

Well, we couldn't have ordered up better weather or a more fun group of people for our Diablo ride! Everyone made it to the top! Thanks to Mitch for starting us out, and Phil who rode back uphill to help Katie. It's always nice to see familiar faces and meet new cyclists. See you soon on another ride~

Hi y'all! I didn't have my phone with me on the ride so please upload cool pix for the group to share :) Thanks! Hope to see you guys on another ride.

Hi all, see you guys tomorrow at the exit of Pleasant Hill BART. We are going to go left on Treat, right on Bancroft and across the street it turns into Walnut Ave. (not Blvd.) which leads us to Northgate.

On the way back, I want to take the Contra Costa Trail back to Ynacio Valley, and there, cyclists can choose to extend the ride on Iron Horse Trail to Danville or beyond, or go back via a trail through Heather Farms to Pleasant Hill BART.

If Marat decides to join us, does anyone have an extra road helmet he could borrow? Thanks, gang.

Which bike is suitable for this ride and is a helmet necessary? (I only can wear a MTB helmet)

    September 18, 2013

    • Franny

Road bike. Well, people will "hound" you if you don't wear a helmet and there are some cars on the road esp. during the weekend, but it's only the law for under age 18. Your decision, but I recommend it. Maybe you can borrow someone's? I'll put up a request in the comment section.

Do we know the current situation post the Mtn Diablo fire? Are the trails affected?

    September 16, 2013

    • Zuzana P.

the only fire you will see is the one coming from our carbon wheels... not that I am a climber or anything...

I always wear my lightest earrings, full carbon, dura-ace clasps. What do YOU wear, Zuzana? :P (inside joke Aubrey. Google "shit cyclists say"

What kinda speed? I usually do Northgate to Summit in, say, 1:10-1:18.

Well, John, it's hard to say. We usually do 12-14 on the flats. I'm a medium climber and have done Diablo 3-4 times. I never timed it. This is a socially-paced ride but everyone rides at their own speed and we regroup at certain times. You can start out with us and take off if we're too slow!

Lovely, lovely. Been to two other Meetup events - a trail run and a hike - and both were frankly really fast and, well, not very social! Glad to hear this group's more chill and whatnot - really what I'm looking for. See you there!
