Fast and Flat but Not a Race! Oakland-Alameda Loop

Here's a fast ride to burn up some pre-Thanksgiving calories!

Details:  34 flat miles  16-18 MPH average pace

Meet:  9:15 AM Roll at 9:30 AM

We'll meet at MacArthur BART and ride on the new Bay Bridge Trail at a leisurely pace for a warm up.  Then we'll ride at an average of about 16-18 MPH pace on a loop through Alameda.

There is one hilly blip after MacArthur BART

Route: http://www.mapmyride.com/us/emeryville-ca/alameda-fast-and-flat-route-311396985  (rough sketch, I'm going to modify it a little.)

There will be NO sweeper for this ride, so if it's too fast but you want to go part way please still join us!

Bring:  Snacks, two bottles of water and lytes, helmet, tube

Breaks:  Snack, water, bathroom stop midway.  Use BART restroom (if open) or we can stop at a gas station or Starbucks before the ride.

Rain or drizzle cancels.

Franny as usual to her form put together another great ride. Good pace, enjoyable company, lots of variance of views and remarkably everyone pretty much hung together. Glad I did some hills prior to the ride...the perfect combo!

But really, thank you! It's nice having someone else do all the prep work and all I have to do is show up and enjoy. Pretty hard to beat and you do a great job of it..."little known facts" narrations and all!

Well done Franny, it's going to be tough living up to your rep.! ;)

So glad it was a safe success! Whew! Any tips are welcome, haha! My largest class was 40, but they weren't on bikes! Impressive!!

I've ridden in those big packs through town though, and it is great when no one has flats or issues, but often they did so you all were lucky, yeah!! I've ridden around the lake 100's of times, glad you guys had a great ride out there and didn't wrestle with any cars!!

You all get T-Shirts, "I Survived Oakland!" Haha. It was lovely that we all stayed together, amazing actually. What a fun group of people-I had a great time with the diverse scenery: 3 bridges, lumber, cranes, murals, mansions, Alameda shoreline, and the airport!

Thanks to Don for leading part of the group back to Mac BART early and for Shana for suggesting the final loop around Lake Merritt. According to Paddy, that put our mileage at 40.82. See you on a future ride!

Great fun, well planned no-drama ride. Lots of cool new sights were seen, and great people met. Thanks again Franny for hosting!

Also, my Strava data. I ended up at City Center BART and the next train to SF came in 6 minutes... awesome :) http://www.strava.com...

Great ride! Creative, with vistas and urban challenges. Well led, with good online and verbal directions. Friendly riders, with basic urban riding skills. Good luck too that among almost so many riders no one appeared to suffer a mechanical or flat!

Will there be a place to purchase lunch or should we bring?

    November 24, 2013

    • Franny

Hi Erica. Bring lots of snacks, fluids. There will be a lunch stop but not until about 3/4 into the ride.

Sorry. The group got way too big for my comfort so I'll help reduce the numbers.

Sorry to cancel last minute, took a hard fall on ice snowboarding today and tweaked my hip. Dont think a long bike ride will work :( Love the idea for the ride though, hope there is another one like this soon!

This'll be my first time biking on the new bay bridge (finally). Excited!

Finally, although we're meeting at MacArthur BART, we will be passing a lot of other BART stations on the way back: Lake Merritt, 12th St, 19th St. and then MacArthur, so you can peel off anywhere if you need a BART station.

    See you Sunday

Helllo Bay Cyclists! This seems like it's going to be a big group for a very fun ride. I want to point out a few things. With a group this large, there is no way we will be able to stay together the whole time, so expect to break up into subgroups. Please PRINT OUT THE MAP or take your GPS with you. I will be tweaking the map now to make it more accurate, but there may be slight deviations. We will be riding through not so scenic but nevertheless interesting industrial areas such as the Port of Oakland and so DON'T EXPECT exquisite Bay Views at every turn!

The distance is closer to 40 miles. There is no sweeper, but the lunch stop will be at the corner of Park and Central in Alameda so anyone off course can meet us there. I do not know exactly when, maybe around 12:30.

Is it ok if I bring my son to join the ride with us

    1 · November 18, 2013

    • Franny

Of course, Huda...if he can go fast and flat!

Can't make this one but would LOVE to see this ride more often.

Made travel plans, won't be going!

    Hi Cyclists,

As another member pointed out, this is the same day as the inaugural Berkeley Half Marathon which will run along our intended route. Therefore, I have changed our route, which I think is even better for this type of ride. I will look at the marathon route to make further adjustments. The mileage will roughly be about the same. Same place. Same time. See you then!
