Tour de Peninsula | SF-Palo Alto | Caltrain Return

Description:  This is a really cool 50 mile, mostly flat ride from SF to Palo Alto.  Intermediate, moderately fast paced 14-18 MPH on flats depending on tailwind/headwind.  There is usually more of a tailwind going south. Unfortunately, no sweeper on this ride.  Several Caltrain bailout options.  Bring a smart phone to be able to locate the nearest one.

Meet:  9:15 AM meet and greet  9:30 sharp, ready to roll.

I can not estimate times at alternative meeting places, but our first stop will be Peet's in downtown SSF  here: @ 11:30 or so.  I will not be checking  my phone for texts once the ride begins.

Highlights include:

• Candlestick Park "gateway preview" of our destinations.

• Bay Trails

• Brunch in charming downtown South San Francisco

• Coyote Point

• Wind Organ and Sonic Sculpture at Seal Point Park

• Bay/Wetlands

• Industrial areas

• Oracle Compound

• Facebook

• Architecture of Palo Alto

• Long bike-friendly stretches of roads

Bring:  Helmet, Tube, Water/Lytes, Snacks, layers, money for train/BART return.  Caltrain to Millbrae BART and BART to SF is how I like to do it.

Rest Stops:  South SF, Seal Point, Facebook/Willow Rd.  As always, I'll take you to "only the best" restrooms.

Rough Sketch of Route: (note this ride stops short of Sunnyvale)

End point:  San Antonio Caltrain

Rain/drizzle cancels and ride will be rescheduled to 3/16/14.

Even though some problems happened such as rear brake cable of my bike broke , some bikers had an accident at the beginning of the tour, I and some bikers lost you on a part of the track, It was brilliant ride. I am happy I met you, great bikers. I would like to attend to next organizations.

This ride keeps reminding me of that song: Do You Know the Way to San Jose, Burt Bacharach (What a joke)
Do you know the way to San Jose?
    I've been away so long
I may go wrong and lose my way
Do you know the way to San Jose?
I'm going back to find some peace of mind in San Jose

Thanks Franny for the ride today! The group that went to the Gourmet Haus Staudt ended up riding 65 miles with the exception of Chris who lives in or near Redwood City.

Well, quite the adventure today! Thanks for coming out to tour the Peninsula! It was terrific to reunite with my "regular" cycling buddies and meet new ones. I really want to thank the true heroes who helped Meir, and flat tire repairs; for Scott for helping bring up the back; and Shameel for leading Andrew, Stuart and me to San Jose.
Meir, I REALLY hope you heal well and yes, darn those tracks! Thanks for your reassuring note. I tried to keep the group together as best I could, and am sorry I couldn't answer texts mid-ride. But I hope you all made it home safely.

Michael Pierce here (white bike). I peeled off at Redwood shores to see a friend. So I'm safe and done for the day. (2:30)

Thank you so much for organizing the ride! I hope to do another one with you soon!

My bike and my son's bike was stolen from the garage at my apt. :-( I was using my son'ts to cycle and the only one left now is my daughter's. At this time, I don't know if I will be able to make it as I have not taken hers on a long ride.
I will notify you before the event tomorrow am to confirm if I will be able to make it. Thanks!

    Hi Cyclists,

I'm looking forward to our ride. We'll be joined by Bay Area Cycling folks, so it will be a sizable group. There is an enticing Naked Bike Ride that starts from the same place at 11:00 AM in case you wish to defect or turn back early ;) Please update your RSVP to "No" if you are no longer able to attend.

There are great restrooms at the north end of the Ferry Building as well as a store for last minute snacks, drinks and Blue Bottle coffee. Please come early so we can leave on time.

    See you then~

What would be the eta to the end of the ride/San Antonio Caltrain station? Thanks.

    1 · March 4, 2014

    • Franny

Hi Alvin, for a 50 mile ride, including stops, I'd allow for max 4.5-5 hrs. Breaks time depends on the group. You can always cut out early or speed ahead if short on time.

Perfect! Thanks Franny! This will be my longest ride ever. Looking fwd. to it!
