Stinson Beach and Mt. Tam

Meet and Greet 10:15 am Roll at 10:30 am

Total distance of 41 miles with ~4563 feet of elevation.

There is some intense climbing on this route.  We will regroup at the top of the climbs and the bottom of the descents.

I'm repeating a ride Roger Thomas created and who put together the following description:

This is an awesome ride, that takes us through the scenic Marin County.

We will start at Mike's Bikes in Saulsalito and go on to Old Mill Park.

Alternatively, you may start in SF, cross the Golden Gate Bridge and meet us at Mikes Bikes for a total of 56 miles and 5000 feet climb.

**********

Here begins the first major climb as we ascend up to four corners, from here there is some more ascending and descending as we take the beautifully scenic state route 1 all the way to Stinson Beach.

Here we will stop for fluid and energy replenishment.

We then continue on the 1 with some flat riding towards Bolinas where we take a right on to the Bolinas Fairfax road.

This is an intense 8 mile category 1 or 2 climb up to the beginning of Seven Sisters. We then ride Seven Sisters and on to descend back in to Mill Valley. From here we take the Bike path back to Saulsalito.

We'll throw in an extra bonus and go 2.9 miles to the top of Mt. Tam.  Why?  Because it is there.

PS, If you do Mt. Tam, Mt. Diablo and Mt. Hamilton, you've completed the trifecta of the steepest mountains in the immediate Bay Area!

Flat pace - Moderate (14 - 16 mph)

Climbing pace - (Whatever pace you can manage, we will regroup after every climb (directions on climbs is very straight forward))  I will be slow on the long climbs, expect to wait for me about 15 minutes at the top of the 8 mile climb of Fairfax-Bolinas Rd. and other major climbs (fast riders can do interval training!)

Bring: Helmet mandatory, lots of Lytes/Water/tube/snacks and energy!

Parking: Mike's Bikes dirt lot or Sports Basement near Golden Gate Bridge.

To me it was what bike riding in the bay area is all about. If you might not know what that means come ride with this group. Beautiful ride and friendly people.

...and I really want to thank you, Matt, as one of the stronger riders, for going back downhill to do some reconnaissance work!

DK put it perfectly. I am so glad you all came to share what I consider to be the "crown jewel" ride of Marin!

Looks like a fun ride and glad I got on the go list. What time are riders leaving from the S. F. side. Considering that as a start point.

where is the GGB meeting place at 9:30?

      March 30, 2014

    • Jason U.

By the cement blocks. There should be about ~8 cyclists meeting up there.

Don't worry about the weather guys. It's supposed to clear up by tomorrow. I added the one wait-lister and have closed RSVP's. You can still change to "No" if you are no longer able to attend.

Hope so. It's pouring rain right now...

Bold to say 0% chance of rain! But I heard that this weekend was going to "shake out" this way.

Changed my RSVP to No. My +1 thinks this will be too much climbing for his hybrid. Looks like the weather on Sunday will be good, have a great time! :)

Well, Tracy, see you again on a more hybrid-friendly ride!

I will drive to the meeting point in Sausalito, so if anyone is interested, I am offering to pick them up somewhere around Lake Merritt, Emeryville, Berkeley, El Cerrito... Have 2 more spots in my car/bike rack. Let me know.

Hey Zuzana! Do you still have space for another rider + a bike? I am in Emeryville. Just let me know, thanks!

      March 28, 2014

    • Franny

      Barbara, Zuzana isn't attending.

My +1 and I will be taking Bart in from the East Bay. We'll plan to meet up any others at GG park then head down to the Sports Basement spot. From there we will ride out to the Mike's Bikes and group with the others. Anyone else joining is more then welcome to join us for the ride over the bridge.

Hey all, I've limited this ride to 6 cyclists who wish to ride at the intermediate level. For now, all 7 on the list can come, but inevitably there are cancellations. When the list drops to 5, wait-listers will get notification and automatically be signed up in order. So, please be sure to change your RSVP to "No" if you are unable to attend to allow a wait-listed person to come along. Don't be a no-show! No-shows will be noted and may jeopardize your participation in future rides. There is a very good chance all wait-listers will be able to attend. Again, I would like to be a cohesive group, so if a 10-15 min. wait at the top of 3 big hills bugs you, wait for another time or organize your own ride using my map! Thanks!

Hi Cyclists-I took out the word "challenge" from the title of this ride. It's not easy, but it's not meant to be a race although I know most of you are fast. I prefer that we regroup at the top of climbs and the bottom of descents. I can go the distance but am slow on the climbs. Let me know if any riders have the patience to wait at the tops, probably no more than 15 min. on average for the 3 major climbs, 4 corners, Bolinas Fairfax Rd. and Mt. Tam. Thanks.

    1 · March 19, 2014

I won't be racing but like to push it once in a while. I have no problem waiting for others. I've never ridden this route so don't want to get lost either.

      2 · March 19, 2014

  • Franny

I've added the Mt. Tam portion to this ride, an extra 2.9 miles to the summit. "Why? Because it is there." If you don't get that reference, "Why? Just because."
