Devil's Slide's Brand New Paved Trail and Tunnel Ride | SF to Montara

The Devil's Slide Multi-use Trail just opened 3/27/2014.  It's great because not only is it a dramatic stretch of the coast to see, but it's a safer way to go north instead of Northbound  HWY 1.  The Devil's Slide Tunnel is fabulous fun going on Southbound  Hwy 1 and I don't want to miss that!

The trail is 1.3 miles and we will stop often for photo ops and views.

Details:  About 47 miles with 3400' climb  Average Pace: 14-16 MPH on the flats  Route: Round trip SF, Pacifica, Montara

! Precaution:  This is an Advanced Intermediate ride with prolonged climbs.  You must be comfortable on roadways with traffic and narrow shoulders in some places.  There are 1.8 miles on northbound HWY 1 from Montara to the south entrance of the trail.  We will be returning via the very long and steep Sharp Park Road and then north on Skyline Blvd. which includes the crossing over 2 Freeway Entrances but is a standard route for cyclists.  It is not pleasant but gets the job done for the return.  I have some side streets after a good portion of the road and we wrap around the East Side of Lake Merced.

We've done this return route from Pacifica in the past.

Meet:  9:15 AM  Depart: 9:30 Sharp  I'm sorry I can't estimate the return time.  Bailout is Daly City BART

                             Montara Bakery

Water, Restroom, Snack and Lunch stops:  Sharp Park Golf Course and the adorable Montara Bakery.

Bring:  Helmet, Snacks. Lytes, Water, Tube, Pump and Lunch Money-you order at the counter

Activity Fee:  2.00 for website and organizer fees

Rough Route:  MapMyRide and Google don't have the new trail in their system, yet, so I can't trace it.

Rain/Drizzle Cancels and we'll reschedule

One of our members, Rez, worked on the tunnel construction.  They used a combination of explosives and about a dozen "tunnel scrapers" which cost about[masked]K a piece.  Here are some of his pictures.  Thanks, Rez.

What a fun ride today with such a great group of people. This route is like Disneyland to me--the switchbacks are Dumbo; the Tunnel is Space Mountain, and Skyline is the Tower of Terror. I can't think of a ride to compare the Devil's Slide path-it was simply gorgeous.

hi there, I may also meet there if that's ok. I just did the first part of this route down to Daly city as part of another ride today. I've not done much riding lately apart from that, so I'll see how my legs are feeling in the morning ;)

Hi Cyclists, just a quick interim update. The 20th IS Easter Sunday, so if this date doesn't work for you, please change your RSVP to "No." The Montara Cafe will be open until 1 PM. I called ahead to be sure we don't overwhelm them. They are happy to host us with an efficient prix fixe menu that will be 11.00 per person with regular, vegetarian and vegan options. Drinks may be purchased separately. You may also BYOL and join us at the tables. Last time we went there, they were happy to see us, but the various individual orders took a long time. This is a much better idea.

Our only rest stop before then will be at the Sharp Park Golf Course for a quick snack, water and bathroom break. No lingering this time…we'll save that for lunch! More to come...

My goodness!! Those are views I would kill for if I wasn't dead already by biking up uphill 47 miles! Franny, can you suggest more bailout points? I want to do the whole thing but I will definitely be practical about this ride ;)

Parijat, really the only Bailout BART is Daky City, BUT there may be a Samtrans bus that is suitable for bikes. I am not familiar with the system, but here's the link to a map for starters. You might consider a bus return from Pacifica if there is one. Hope you can make's awesome! http://www.samtrans.c...
