Dr. Jerry Duvinsky - How to lose control and gain freedom.

Dr. Jerry Duvinsky, a clinical psychologist in private practice and co-founder of Oakdale Psychology Associates, a multidisciplinary behavioral health clinic in Endicott, NY, will give a talk based largely on his book entitled, “How to Lose Control and Gain Emotional Freedom: Embracing the Dark Emotions Through Integrative Mindful Exposure”. The premise of the book and his talk is that much of human suffering and many psychiatric symptoms and issue are the direct result of endeavors to avoid and control the so called “dark emotions” such as anger, fear, and shame. It is by losing our control, and mindfully facing and embracing these difficult emotional experiences that we can reduce suffering and actually find peace and equanimity in the heart of pain. Dr. Duvinsky poses a conceptual model for understanding and treating a wide array of emotional issues which he terms Integrative Mindful Exposure (IME). This methodology combines elements of Buddhist mindfulness practice with emotional exposure techniques derived from behavioral learning theory, as well as elements of human attachment theory and contemporary neuroscience.
