BRINGING BIOTECH TO NYC
New York City has a wealth of prestigious universities and scientific talent, yet it plays a minor role in the life sciences industry.
The panelists for this event represent different components of the life sciences industry that are present in NYC- including tech transfer, venture capital, and medical devices, demonstrating that there is a base from which we can continue to build.

Panelists
Orin Herskowitz is the VP of Intellectual Property and Tech Transfer for Columbia University, as well as Executive Director of Columbia Technology Ventures (CTV). Orin received his BA from Yale and his MBA from the Wharton School of Business. Prior to joining Columbia, Orin spent 7 years at the Boston Consulting Group���s New York office as a strategy consultant, and was previously an entrepreneur and a consultant to start-ups.

Ilan Reich is the President & CEO at Vizio Medical Devices LLC, which is located in Manhattan. Vizio has licensed and developed proprietary microfluidic technology for separating plasma from blood on a macro scale for nephrology, cardiology and oncology uses. Prior to Vizio, Ilan served as Chairman of SpectruMedix, LLC and President and Co-CEO of Inamed. He is a graduate of Columbia College and Columbia University School of Law.

Arthur Tinkelenberg, Ph.D., is a Venture Partner at Ascent Biomedical Ventures, a venture capital firm investing in seed and early-stage biomedical technology (medical device, biopharmaceutical, healthcare services, and IT) companies. Art is the CEO of Enumeral Biomedical, Inc., serves on the Board of Directors of Ouroboros Medical, Curaseal, Targanox, XLumena, and is a Board Observer for Azevan Pharmaceuticals. He earned his Ph.D. in molecular genetics from The Rockefeller University where he was a Rockefeller and NSF Fellow and was a Research Scientist at Columbia University.

Derek Brand is Director of Business Development for the New York Academy of Sciences. In that role he is responsible for driving growth at the NYAS through corporate partnerships and network expansion, as well as help to establish a more efficiently connected environment for VCs, entrepreneurs, and scientists in the greater NYC area. He was previously Director of BD for HyperMed, Inc. and an equity analyst at Cheirologic Partners, following the biotech sector.
