BITCOIN "MINING"

Not only do we have a great location for our upcoming event, we will be having Scott Nelson, co-founder of Free Geek Vancouver, and active bitcoin "miner", come to our meetup to facilitate a discussion on bitcoin mining. If you want to learn about the ins and outs of "mining", plus hear about new ASIC devices this is a must attend event for you!

Other interesting topics are sure to arise as they always do! See you there!

Does anybody know -- can I refuse to accept anything but bitcoin for a service rendered in Canada. ? I mean, can I refuse Canadian dollar?

I'm pretty new to Bitcoin, but I'm wondering - let's say you did do that. How do you charge for something that is worth less than the value of a Bitcoin? Also, what happens if Bitcoins reach $500 a coin? Or $1000? Does it split at some point?

you have to accept canadian dollars for all debts and obligations. So you cannot refuse cash from an employer who owes you for wages. But I think you are fine to demand bitcoin for goods in trade. Because the buyer doesnt owe you anything prior to the trade. (IMO)

Also a sidenote I wanted to bring up - if you are mining with GPUs, you might want to look into Vanity Mining - https://vanitypool.appspot.com/ . It is basically a way to earn some Bitcoins by creating neat-looking Bitcoin addresses for bounties. Thanks to the crypto employed, using these addresses does not compromise your security (for more info, check out the FAQ).

Coincidentally, if you want cool-looking addresses, like 1Satoshi, 1Bastet or 1Toronto, you can put up bounties for them at the pool as well. Be sure to pay the honest fee and your address should be generated fairly quickly.

Just wanting to add what I mentioned during the meeting:

"These numbers have nothing to do with the technology of the devices; they are the maximums that thermodynamics will allow. And they strongly imply that brute-force attacks against 256-bit keys will be infeasible until computers are built from something other than matter and occupy something other than space."

    http://security.stackexchange.com/questions/25375/why-not-use-larger-cipher-keys

Brute forcing the entire SHA-256 is infeasible until we have quantum computers. Moore's law will most likely stop applying soon when we will be dealing with transistors the size of single atom.
