Holiday Dinner

Last year, we saw the tree and it was pandemonium! This year, let's have dinner and avoid the crowd. Someone email me and suggest a REALLY affordable place. Let's enjoy latkas, collard greens (I love it), or egg nog (with a touch of rum) -- not all at once!

Hi guys I know it was cold last night but I completely understand why it wasn't warm where we were seated. Mike constantly apologized. Things don't always work out the way we may have planned but in the end I enjoyed meeting all of you. I have learnt not to cry over spilt milk and I'm doing just that. Any venue that we would have chosen someone would have been disappointed by something or the other. So lesson learnt . Sometimes we need to compromise and just make the most of it . Things could have been worst. In the end I had fun, thanks again Mike for hosting and giving us a mini art tutorial /exhibit through Hell's kitchen. Can't wait to meet up with all of you again.

Awww, thank you Paula, & all who enjoyed each other's company there & at Bar Nine later. You are as gracious as accomplished in your various entrepreneurial endeavors!

I had a good time even though I had to work late so I arrived very late and met everyone at Bar 9. Most people I was meeting for the 1st time but it felt as if we were old friends coming together. Thanks everyone for the great time. Hope to see all of you soon.

Attended my first meetup with the group and not a good one for me. Why gather in a room that was so cold when we could have been inside where it was warm? Paul you skipped out without saying good night. Guess you were too cold too.

    1 · December 8, 2013

    • Mike F.

Sorry Paulette. Once again, I reserved that room because we had 25 RSVPs & if near that # attended, we could sit together. It would have been tough to do so even with our actual turnout, but with arrangements including the fireplace running throughout the event-& the waitress saying to move the seats we placed near it a little further back due to the heat presumed to grow scorching-I thought all would be warm enough. I even consulted with the first guests there on whether to sit there & would have gone with a consensus, but there was none & I had to make a choice then, not knowing the fire would be ineffective. Cold tolerance varies, but my apologies, I did not mean to test anybody's comfort level, as I said during the event & my comment here just afterwards.

Very good to see all! Besides the guest I brought, there were 15 of us, those who run late, follow the conversation, we led a couple to join us late or afterwords at Bar Nine-a bunch there now after 11 PM! Much good fellowship & glad people liked the food & prices, sorry that the roaring fireplace ended up more decorative than effective at spreading heat, lol! Some discussed holding a meetup, including one guy in his home, I think that is a great idea(l), just write Keri here or click "suggest a meetup". Thanks everyone!

Soon the Holiday Dinner is upon us! We have a very good balance of ladieieies & gentleman, so jus' show up, even those who did not RSVP yes are welcome! Plenty of space in the beautiful, high ceiling very BACK room through the doors behind & facing the fireplace! Order a snack/beverage or more, yet the full meals are very good & prices are at most moderate, even large dishes with sides are under $20, some much less. The Renaissance Restaurant, 776 9th Avenue, just south of 52nd Street, back room. 6:45 PM. Come on down, alone or with a f(r)iend, you will find much good fellowship & some attractive people of the opposite sex!

Welcome new member & "Midwest girl" Aesha (which one is you in your profile photo?)---> to the group & the Holiday dinner! I use this opportunity to REITERATE what some have missed: the VENUE for the event is CHANGED to The Renaissance Restaurant, 776 9th Avenue just south of 52nd Street. In the special WAY back room through doors & behind the fireplace!

    Hi Everyone,

May we just have the regular menu and order what we want instead of the "special" menu?

    1 · December 4, 2013

    • Mike F.

Sure lovely. I do not know what you mean though-there is one giant menu, pages of sections for every meal of the day like a fancy diner, you can order any whole or combo meal, platter, sandwich, burger, pasta, drinks...Greek owned so those dishes are good, I recommend chef salad, burgers (Ostrich, Buffalo, Turkey regular w/toppings), sides/sweet potato fries, shakes...You can order from appetizers-omelets!

      1 · December 5, 2013

    • keva

Thank you, Mike. I was referring actually to the $30/40 set menu that Keri mentioned. It looks like we got our place now so hopefully we will see everyone there.

Sorry I havent been getting the notices. Is Qi allowing us to get whatever we want or enforcing the $40 per person thing? Ive been to Qi many times and suggested its one of the few places in Manhattan where you can have a decent entree for $10. They even have a daily brunch menu with a meal and appetizer for $7! So the prix fixe thing is shocking.

    December 5, 2013

    • Mike F.

Chloe, click on the link to "View Conversation on Meetup" First see that Keri SWITCHED the events venue: it is NOW at the Renaissance Restaurant at 776 9th Avenue just south of 52nd Street, at 6:45 PM Saturday. Then I describe the place, decor, affordability + huge cuisine & dish options in 3 posts in the conversation below that!

      2 · December 5, 2013

  • Mike F.

Folks, you are gonna like this place. Qi was a reasonable price, this one is also well lit & roomy, we can have many table pushed together, has great art + exponentially more/numerous cuisine & beverage options. Prices are inexpensive through moderate only. Just go to the very BACK room folks, behind the fireplace & skylight room!

Which still has those same amenities. Folks can order lightly/a la carte, full but affordable meals, OR dinner with a starter & sides included; just pay for food & drinks ordered + tax & tip! Note: they may ADD an automatic gratuity for large groups, if so, that takes care of the tip!

    C & E (or 1) trains to 50th Street stop, B, D & E to 7th Avenue (@ 53rd Street).. A, B, C, D & 1 trains to 59th Street. The Renaissance, 776 7th Avenue, just south (before) 52nd Street. It will be under Keri's name & group!

Many great tavern/drinking (like Bar Nine, 807 9th Avenue) options-even 2 homemade ice cream shops within secondsif folks want to break off-ttyl!

Keep in mind that some restaurants raise their prices during the holiday season. Also, some may insist on a pre fixe menu for a group this size.

      December 4, 2013

  • Mike F.

I think we should NOT go to a restaurant that for a typical meal costs anything like $30-$40. We already see some will find that a burden & will feel badly about the expense, yet social pressure to join,. Others without explanation will just not show up. Goal: inclusive & not subject anyone to embarrassment.

Pio Pio has 8 locations, no menu listed, but a call yielded a range of $22-$30 on average just for the entrees. We should find a place where entrees average in the mid-teens, absolute MAX. If not BYOB, folks who want to save money by avoiding alcohol, which is a big expense.

Space & the ability to sit together or nearby is useful. I will see what else I can find, but for now, I suggest The Renaissance Restaurant, 776 9th Avenue just south of 52nd Street. Why?

Like a fancy diner, booths, art, skylights & fireplace in back. Menu size of a Bible, whole meals, drinks, burgers, sandwiches, platters, salads, Greek + other specials...& a charming back room I can reserve free.

    2 · December 4, 2013

    • Mike F.

Thanks Paula, it is borderline in price-besides 2 dishes, all entrees cost at least 20 something. Since Kerry's listing specifies VERY affordable, & some others have expressed that concern, see my post about The Renaissance. Also:

I stopped by there this afternoon. We will be able to be in the back room past the skylights, alone or otherwise, which the fireplace faces, is roomy, has old world streetlamps, fake balconies, Italianate design charm. Also ALL entrees (except for one monster gourmet 18 ounce steak dish) are below $20, many well/way under! A huge menu with all meals of the day, meats/fish poultry/pasta, salads & burger/platter menu sections, appetizers desserts/diet food/shakes & sides galore, & many meals come with soup or salad, potato & veggies.

Also all kinds of drinks, hard liquor, wine, & $4 beers. I often go there, it is quality food. Thus especially due to price, also due to endless/exponentially more dishes/dining options, this is my suggestion.

Thanks Paula and Mike! Also, may I suggest the following: Going forward, perhaps we should set a dollar cap for restaurant choices (e.g. $25/entrée).

We also should firm up the location by a week before.

Does agreeing that $30-$40 per person is a tad steep leave me in danger of being labeled a cheapskate by all the lovely ladies? Im fine either way wi Qi or another place. Meh, I'm young. I've my while life to make back my fortune...

My opinion? Let's narrow it down to Qi (Thai food) and Southern Hospitality (BBQ) and vote by Wednesday latest so we can book a table. I fear if we leave it too late we might be forced to go to this Scottish joint called McDonald's...

Also, A trend im noticing with alot of groups who want an all out dinner without the cost is to host a Potluck. I guess someone with access to a big space or who has a large house/apt would have to volunteer to host it but it seems to be the thing to do this season. Just a thought.

Hi, I like Chloe's suggestions Qi (Hells Kitchen or Greenwich Village) or Southern Hospitality (Hells Kitchen) since getting all smeared up with BBQ sauce sounds fun and festive.

I have been considering places to suggest. Keri stressed affordability, others convenience. How about a small usually sleepy place with nice decor, a cheap but tasty all you can east Midtown Indian buffet for a late lunch, IF folks like this & can meet around 2 or so? Looking for places that can fit many if turn out is good too, Tell me what you think.

Okay . . . this is now less than a week away and still no location for about 19 people? Wouldn't we have to make a reservation for such a large group? If I may, I'd like to suggest a place in Brooklyn that I went to once. It was a Saturday night the last time I was there and it was not overwhelmingly crowded so it may work for a last minute venue. It's called 1 or 8:
    1 or 8
    66 S 2nd St, Brooklyn, NY ‎
    (718)[masked]

What do you guys think?? Any other suggestions??
