Jason Kendall on "Cassini: Mission to Saturn, the Jewel of the Solar System"

Jason Kendall will speak on Cassini, the groundbreaking mission to Saturn.  It's made hundreds of astounding observations of the ringed planet. We'll learn about the most gorgeous planet, reviewing the amazing pictures and the fascinating science. We'll also learn about its collection of moons, including the enigmatic Titan and Enceladus, two moons that hold the possibility of reshaping the way we think about life in our Solar System.

After the lecture, join us up on the rooftop for a view of the heavens through a 20-inch telescope!

Sounds like a great event and the weather looks clear. NYC travelers: Is there a group that wants to attend and take MetroNorth train? Two best options are 5:48 PM NYC arrive 6:32 PM in Stamford or a 5:50 PM arrive 6:36 PM. Taxi is about 20 mins and we could split with about 4 people. Stamford Taxi: (203) 325-2611. Respond and we can get a group together and meet in Grand Central or at Stamford station to catch taxi.

I also would be very interested in going and would like to know if anyone driving is willing to take passengers against a contribution toward gas/tolls.

Best thing for people to do is to get a cab as a group to the observatory. It's about $25 each way. Or carpool a zipcar. Most likely, that is the cheapest way for a group of three or four.

Have you had three/four possible RSVPs from NYC?

I am interested in attending, however, I do not have an inexpensive way of getting there at the moment. Is it possible for one of the organization leaders to provide a ride?

There is no public bus to the observatory. It's the Metro North and a cab, or split a zipcar. It's a beautiful location, but if the expense is great, then I would watch the skies for whether or not it is clear. If it's cloudy, then it won't be worth a $60 night. It's very flattering that you'd do that for little old me, but the big draw is the telescope on the roof. That's the reason for the place, and it's a great experience. But if it's cloudy, you won't be happy.

Thanks for the tip. But if the cab fare to the observatory is more than the trainfare up I'm not sure I can handle that. Too bad there's no easier connection. It's a great idea.
