I was this trail once 2 years ago. I was there alone and lost along the trail (did not bring map with me). It took me longer to get back to Trail Head. I want to hike there again. Does anyone interest hiking with me?
This hike will be 10.4 challenging miles. The first half of this hike is constant up or down, the second has more level areas. You need to be in good shape before trying this hike. Several steep climbs are involved as well as one long descent that’s sure to leave your legs quivering from the exertion. We will climb and descend four mountains – Windbeam, Bear, Board, and Harrison – to take in views of the surrounding mountains as well as the Wanaque and Monksville Reservoirs. Also scramble over Tory Rocks.
We'll be leaving NYC at around 7 a.m. on Saturday. Cars meet at Stonetown Recreation Complex parking lot which is about 40 miles west of NYC Off I-287 exit 55. The time to meet at the parking lot is around 8:15 a.m. Reason that we need to get there so early, hike will take about 6 - 8 hours depending on our pace.
Parking: RT 287 to exit 55, take 511 N (Wanaque), continue through Wanaque for several miles. Make a left onto West Brook Rd. Continue across Reservoir. At the T-intersection, make a right onto Stonetown Rd. and turn left on Mary Roth Drive which ends at the Stonetown Recreation Area with a large parking lot.
The number of participants will be limited to 20 people and by the number of cars we have to carpool. Please sign up on the waiting list and once we have a car spot for you I'll move you to the "yes" column.
Regarding gear, be aware that it may be hot and sunny or some rain. I will recommend to bring a lunch snack (long day hiking), sunblock, sunglasses, and rain gear. The trail can be hiked in any good shoes, though boots are preferred. Carry a lot of water; on a hot day, you’ll go through it quickly.
I will bring a map, a compass, and a first aid kit. Post a comment or e-mail me if you have any questions.
