Aloha & Mahalo - BLAZE HAWAI'I Part 1

  • March 28, 2014 · 7:00 PM

Wouldn’t it be great to get away from the freezing cold in February and escape to a tropical island in the South Pacific? Well, you can!  This year, BLAZE>> will be jet-setting from NYC to the Polynesian islands of Hawai’i to bath in the sun, frolic on the beach, and backpack its verdant landscape.  So dig your summer attire out of the closet and get ready to escape the bitter cold into the Polynesian sun.

For the first part of the trip, we will be flying to the island Kaua’i and hike the famous Na Pali coast.  This will be a 4-night, 5-day backpacking trip along the Kalalau Trail (http://www.kalalautrail.com/).  The hike will take you along vertical sea cliffs into cavernous lush valleys past cascading waterfalls, turquoise oceans and white sand beaches.  At the end of the trail is the Kalalau Valley surrounded by fluted volcanic walls on a wide sandy beach.

This trip is for experienced backpackers.  You must be in good physical condition and have all the proper equipment to be self-sufficient.  This includes food, water, clothes and shelter – all of which must be carried in your backpack.  Expect the weather to resemble early summer in NYC and be prepared for rain and other unanticipated conditions including pests (i.e., mosquitoes).  We will practice leave-no-trace-principles to preserve the environment (http://lnt.org/learn/7-principles).

You must fly into Honolulu no later than March 28th.  We will spend a day in O’ahu and fly to Kaua’i the following day to begin the backpacking trip.  The backpacking trip will end on April 4th and you can fly back to NYC as early as April 5th. The estimated cost of the trip is around $2,000.  This includes flying to Hawai’i ($700), an internal flight ($150), hotels ($300), car rentals ($200), park permits and miscellaneous costs.  We will try to further reduce the costs but yes, this is an expensive trip so start saving your pennies.

If you are interested, please RSVP and you will automatically be placed on the waiting list.  Space is limited and once you are moved off the waiting list, you must submit a non-refundable deposit of $300 to contribute towards group booking costs.  Preference will be given to more active BLAZE members and their level of backpacking experience.

A great trip full of surprises. A relatively difficult hike, amazingly clear ocean, wonderful beach, and unfortunately one serious injury. Thanks, Fa-Tai, for organizing!

What an amazing trip! Loved every aspect of it, including the sheer drop offs, tsunami warnings and nasty ocean currents, but most of all the amazing scenery and great company. Thanks to Fa-Tai for organizing such a great trip!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
