PEMI LOOP, White Mountains, New Hampshire: 4-days/3-nights backpacking

  • Jul 3, 2014 · 5:00 PM

BLAZERs, if you are looking for an outdoor adventure over July 4th weekend, here is an opportunity for you to backpack one of the most difficult hikes in the northeast – the Pemi Loop in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.  Rated as the 2nd most difficult hikes by Backpacker’s Magazine (, the Pemi Loop is a 31.5 mile hike in the Pemigewasset Wilderness that traverses multiple peaks with over 9,000 feet gain in elevation.

Here are two links for more detailed information:

This hike is for experienced backpackers only.  This is not a beginner’s backpacking trip.  You must have attended at least one overnight trip with BLAZE or demonstrate that you have experience backpacking.  Doing long day hikes or car camping do not qualify as backpacking experience.  Additionally, you must be in good shape because this hike requires a high level of strength and stamina.  This is important for your own safety as well as the safety of the group.

The plan is to leave NYC in the afternoon of Thursday, July 3rd and drive to New Hampshire.  We will stay overnight and begin the backpacking trip on Friday, July 4th.  We will hike & camp for three nights, finish the hike on Monday afternoon (July 7th), and drive back to NYC.  You must carry all your equipment and food in your backpack and practice leave-no-trace principles to preserve the environment (  Weather conditions should be comfortable (highs in the mid-70s and lows in the 60s) but be prepared for inclement weather as well as potential bugs.

If you are interested please RSVP and you will automatically be placed on the waitlist.  You will be confirmed once I know your level of backpacking experience.  We will organize transportation and carpool up to New Hampshire.  The estimated cost of the trip is $150-$200 including transport (more costly if we have to rent cars), accommodation for the first night, and other miscellaneous meal costs.

Franconia Notch is my favorite place to go hiking in the northeast, and I think that is included in the pemi loop. If so, I may need to go on this. Will there be lots of waterfalls on the pemi loop?
