bless/sings is a brand new Brooklyn-based vocal group devoted to creating an uplifting community for ourselves and others through music. We believe that group singing has power to heal people, and that singing together is a great way to build a better community. We choose songs that promote love, social justice, and care for the earth. We’ll sing soul, folk, gospel, Motown, chanting, world styles, and modern hymns by living composers.
We rehearse weekly on Thursday evenings and sing for Sunday services at Original Blessing, a Unitarian Universalist* congregation in Greenpoint, and also for various events around the neighborhood.
Some of our special events might include:
• Pop-up choir events in the parks
• Songleading at rallies, marches and protests
• Singing for elder communities and hospice
We’re currently looking for singers to join the choir this fall. Church membership is not required and there is no audition. You don’t need to read music or have previous choral experience. We welcome people of all backgrounds and voices and would love for you to join us!
Check out our Facebook group for up-to-date info on events, performances, and music we’re listening to. If you are interested or would like to learn more, contact Todd Martino (firstname.lastname@example.org; 347-644-8218) and plan to attend our kick-off rehearsal on Thursday, September 12.
* (What the heck is Unitarian Universalism? That is a great question and we’re glad you asked. We are a non-dogmatic community that finds inspiration from the natural world and from the human experience with the Divine. We believe in the interconnection of all beings and are strong advocates of social justice and equality. For many of us, the spiritual experience is based in community and the care for the planet.)
