The Philadelphia Blogger Meetup Group Message Board › Happy New Year (and new decade!)
Long time no talk. I wanted to email the list and say hello, and to let you know that yes, this meetup still exists.
Just over ten years ago I started my first blog. A little closer to 15 my first personal home page. Back then I remember being told from quite a few folks that the effort was wasted, or was down right crazy. Why share so much online in such a public space?
Indeed, the rise of social networking has enabled many of us who used blogging as a means to connect, to share, to express 'an analog impulse as a digital expression' (to paraphrase a good friend I met thru this meetup) in a more private way. So why continue blogging?
As many of us have found out it continues to be a great way to connect with people we may not know. To reach people who we might not have direct means to reach. To express things in a medium that has its own tools of expression. The post. The comment. The link. Blogging, to me in fact, seems to be the native medium of the Web itself.
So now blogging is mainstream. Businesses and purveyors of ideas and activism use its tools daily to widen their influence and sometimes even to inspire to action.
In the earlier days of this meetup, it served a purpose to connect those who were not aware their fellow travelers existed.
These days, with search being as powerful as it is, with Twitter, Facebook and MySpace providing tools for discovering fellow voices so well, that original purpose's urgency has faded.
Along with that, these past few years have brought with them the added personal responsibilities of fatherhood and of family.
So meetups have been further and further between.
In short, a kind of neglect. There is no reason that due to this neglect that this meetup should remain inactive.
There is a terrific group of people here. I believe that there remains a need to get together in the real world so that the kinds of friendships I was blessed to make here can happen for others as well.
Meetup.com enables me to setup people as organizers to setup events independent of one another on the common calendar. Raise your hand and I will give you that functionality.
For further ideas and discussion, feel free to post to the message board or join the related Facebook group.
If it is deemed necessary for me to hand over organizational duties for the group to thrive, then lets find someone to take them on.
Thank you everyone,
